Holocaust-denying bishop threatened with expulsion

VATICAN CITY -- A Catholic bishop who denied the Holocaust is facing expulsion from his traditionalist order for hiring a lawyer linked to the neo-Nazi movement. The Society of St. Pius X said it ordered Bishop Richard Williamson to fire the lawyer, who was to represent him in an appeal next week of a German incitement conviction for saying in a TV interview that he didn't believe Jews were gassed during World War II.

The interview aired the same day Pope Benedict XVI lifted Williamson's excommunication, unleashing a torrent of criticism and threatening the Vatican's relations with Jews.

The Regensburg, Germany court where Williamson is appealing his conviction told the DAPD news agency that he would be represented by Wolfram Nahrath, who has defended neo-Nazis in the past.

The Network Against Nazis group says Nahrath is a former leader of a German neo-Nazi group known as the Wiking-Jugend, or Viking Youth, and says he is currently active in another far-right extremist youth group.

I really dislike this 'the Pope is a Nazi' meme. He was born in Germany in 1927. Hitler Youth membership was mandatory for boys his age, was was military service later in the war. As devout Catholics, his family was not a fan of the Nazis for religious reasons. According to what I've seen, he was not very happy to be in the Hitler Youth and deserted his post at the end of the war. He was a 'Nazi' only in the sense that he lived in Nazi Germany and joined the aforementioned organizations in compliance with the laws of the time.

I don't care for the Papacy or the current Pope. But I limit my criticisms to what he is responsible for.

Williamson isn't just a Holocaust denier. He has promoted the notorious antisemitic fraud "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," claims that Jews are secretly conspiring to run the world, and even weirdly objected to the film "The Sound of Music" because, he said, it glorified "selfish" romantic love and it made the Nazis look "nasty."

He was excommunicated in 1988, not for his antisemitism or his rants against gays but for being consecrated as a bishop by schismatic Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, an opponent of the Vatican II reforms. Last year he and three other schismatic bishops were reinstated despite his continuing vocal Holocaust denial and other offenses on the grounds that while such things made Williamson inter alia a "liar," they did not make him a "heretic," and hence were not grounds for continuing his excommunication

As I posted elsewhere, he is a general all-round antisemite who has endorsed the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. He also far-RW in other ways; e.g. racist, religiously bigoted, and intensely sexist; has even said that women should not wear trousers or shorts, and more viciously that they should not go to universities (Taliban, anyone?). He criticized the late Pope John Paul II for being too liberal and for apologizing for past sins of the Catholic church. He has even implied that killing heretics in the past was perfectly OK and godly.

That girls should not be in universities flows from the nature of universities and from the nature of girls: true universities are for ideas, ideas are not for true girls, so true universities are not for true girls.'
