All 29 trapped New Zealand miners dead: police

(Reuters) - All 29 miners trapped underground in a New Zealand mine for five days are believed to be dead following a second explosion in the Pike River Coal mine, police said on Wednesday.

"It is our belief that no one has survived and everyone will have perished. This is one of the most tragic things I have had to do as a police office," police superintendent Gary Knowles told reporters

2nd blast in New Zealand mine

Police say there has been a second blast inside the New Zealand mine where 29 workers are missing and that no one could have survived.

Police superintendent Gary Knowles said the second explosion occurred Wednesday afternoon.

Potentially explosive methane gas had been swirling in the Pike River mine since the initial blast last Friday.

Rescuers had been kept from entering the mine by the danger.

6. "Mine tragedy: Second blast ends all hope" (nz herald)

Police say there was a second massive explosion in the Pike River mine today, where 29 miners were trapped.

Superintendent Gary Knowles told the Herald the miners couldn't have survived a blast of that magnitude, which occurred at 2.37pm.

Family members were seen crying as they left a police briefing a short time ago.

"Unfortunately I have to inform the public of New Zealand at 2.37pm today there was another massive explosion underground and based on that explosion no one would have survived," Mr Knowles said.
