David Cameron warns of 'huge' influx of Irish migrants
Source: Telegraph

Britain faces a “huge” influx of Irish migrants if the country’s economy collapses, David Cameron warned last night.

The Prime Minister indicated that the potential impact of mass immigration sparked by an Irish economic failure had contributed to the Coalition’s decision to offer an unprecedented loan of up to £10 billion to the Republic.

Mr Cameron’s warning came as international financial regulators set out a series of tough spending and tax decisions that Ireland and other European countries must take to rescue their finances.

The Irish government will today outline a four-year austerity plan which is expected to cut public spending by a total of £12.7 billion over the next four years.

comments any more acceptable.

10. ha!
I do not speak from ignorance...but from first hand experiance of living with and spending untold hours in the jungle with my Irish pals! In order to become an honorary member of the
BRN I had to drink a gallon jug of "Bulkhead Bouncers" and then get sprayed down with a firehose, only then could you join the ranks of the Zulu Warrior...this ceremony took place weekly out in the jungle in a huge hut built by CB's...Brits, Irish and American blokes took part...other activities included smokers (open boxing matches) in which the irish contingent excelled. And, of course, the ubiquitous poker and or Dart matches. Much money changed hands over a deck of cards in those days.

11. I'm sure people also drink, box and gamble where you come from. Remarking on how an influx

of Irish immigrants would increase such activities is fundamentally stereotypical.

29. Oh, I'm not denying anything. But if I posted something like 'theres an american moving into my
spare room, better get a bigger fridge' that would be some similarly stereotyping crap, despite the fact there is an obesity problem in america.

Oh, and just to let you know alcohol consumption in the UK per capita has pretty much caught up with, some statistics say even surpassed, Irelands.

There are douchebags in every country. Sounds like you found a group of Irish ones.

We Irish-Americans had to put up with too much BS to make it in this country, to find comments like yours amusing.

BTW, I don't drink, and I'm proud of it.

Is this the reason why people ignore the illegal irish immigrants, but not the latino illegal immigrants?

'Cuz I have more in common with latinos than I do the Irish.

41. At this time of year, most European countries are wet, dark & cold ...
... so at least they would have the benefit of speaking the same language.

We've survived many waves of Irish immigration over the centuries,
one more isn't going to hurt!

8. The pubs around Boston should be a real blast, then
as they were back in the miserable 80s.

The Irish represented the largest group of undocumented workers in and around Boston. They all said Boston looked just like Dublin and they'd have felt they'd never left home if we all didn't talk so funny.

12. This time around though, I don't think we'll have as many showing up here
between our weak economy and our obsession with illegal immigration.

It would be an interesting test though to see how throngs of new white "illegals" would be regarded in the traditional Irish-American havens.

21. Most people looked the other way in the 80s
and that held true for Azoreans, Brazilians, Mexicans, Salvadoreans, Guatemalans, and everybody else who'd overstayed a tourist visa.

Now that unemployment is high, I'm sure that's no longer the case.

Likely the flood of Irish will head to Canada, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.

(I can't believe "Zealand" shows up as an error on spell check.)

31. Warpy, most people looked the other way long before that too.
I think it would be an interesting test case though if throngs of Irish stayed here illegally again. It would be a chance to sort out the racial bigots from those fearful over employment competition.

I agree that the Irish are more likely to head to other places than here this time around.

That would be a good thing. English idealism are what are screwing up Europe and the via the United States, the whole world. Irish values are much more moral, more real, and down to earth. Bring it on!

22. There are a lot of Irish in England.
When I was growing up there in the 60's, my friends mostly Irish. My first boyfriend and his family were all born in Ireland. Still proud to be Irish, my old Irish boyfriend became a multi millionaire in England.

I think the warning was not because we have a problem with the Irish but we over crowded as it is. I really couldn't tell the difference between Irish and English morals. We all seemed the same to me.

Lennon in particular was a fairly upfront supporter of the IRA.

a sudden heavy increased load on infrastructure, etc.

It wouldn't seem so, given the difference in population size: UK, 62 million; Republic of Ireland, 4.6 million. Surely the total number of immigrants would be no more than a couple of hundred thousand. But the immigrants wouldn't be spread out evenly, of course. They'd be concentrated where the jobs are.

19. And what's the big deal???
They're EU citizens, and before that have had right to work and live in the UK...

Bit like Governor of North Carolina announcing there'd be a big influx of people from South Carolina because of their economy collapsing. Well kind of...

Except ties in EU are a lot looser than in USA.

so they wouldn't be 'undocumented', 'illegal' or whatever in the UK. They could go to other EU countries too, of course, but language makes the UK the easiest choice, They even get to vote in all UK elections too.
