Rallies to support Czech public sector strike

Labor unions in Czech Republic say they plan to stage rallies in major cities all across the country in support of next month's strike of state employees.

Vaclav Picl, deputy head of the country's major union umbrella organization, says the rallies are set to take place Dec. 8 -- the day of the one-day strike -- in all 14 regional capitals including Prague and some county towns.

The strike is meant to protest the cuts by 10 percent of the money allocated for public sector employees the government said are necessary to reduce the budget deficit.

Prime Minister Petr Necas said he was not ready to give in.

Police officers and firefighters who are banned from striking by law will join the rallies. Unions threatened Wednesday further protests are likely to follow.
