California Democrat McNerney retains House seat
Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 05:37 PM by cal04
Source: Associated Press

Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney has been re-elected to a third term in a Northern California congressional district, fending off a challenge from Republican David Harmer.

McNerney held a lead of nearly 2,500 votes on Wednesday with less than 1,900 ballots left to be counted. His re-election means no California congressional seat changed party hands, even as Republicans took back the U.S. House of Representatives with a national GOP landslide on Nov. 2.

The 11th District won by McNerney covers four counties stretching from the eastern San Francisco Bay area to a region of the Central Valley that includes Lodi and part of Stockton. It is evenly split between registered Democrats and Republicans, with independents comprising 18 percent of voters.

McNerney's victory follows a win by Rep. Jim Costa, another Central Valley Democrat who found himself in a tight race this year.

3. Mcnerny was an extreme disappointment to those
Of us who worked so hard to get him elected
In the first place.

This should have been won with a wider margin.

But progressives who worked hard for him in
The first place were far less enthusiastic about him in the
Second.

Well I don't live there now - so none of my business.

If you worked to get him elected, then you must know what that district is like. It's the most conservative district in this part of the state. If you worked to get Pombo kicked out, then you realize how corrupt Pombo was and also what a disaster Harmer would have been.

A real progressive dem is not going to win in that district.

7. McNerney lost considerable ground since the 2008 election.
Some portion of his constituency was unhappy. The main reason he won is that the 3rd candidate siphoned off votes from Harmer.

The state and national party would be wise to do what it takes to retain this seat. The New Democrat Coalition's darling Tauscher managed to move the adjacent CA-10 from solidly Republican seat to one where a Democrat has a good chance of winning. McNerney could do the same if he holds onto this seat for one or two more terms.

4. Thank Goodness!
His district is not far from mine, and I have in the past, canvassed for him, because that area is not as blue as it needs to be. I didn't this time, cause I was working the Oakland area, just trying to get bodies to the poll for the Governor/Senator race instead. Thank Goodness he won, or else I would have felt partially responsible somehow!

5. Thank God because Harmer is as looney as Sarah Palin. Well ... almost.
