Ex-House leader Tom DeLay guilty of money-laundering
Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 09:33 PM by EarlG
Source: Reuters

AUSTIN, Texas — A Texas jury on Wednesday found former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, dubbed "The Hammer" for his hard-driving style, guilty of money laundering and conspiracy.

DeLay was accused of conspiring to illegally funnel $190,000 in corporate campaign donations to Republican candidates for the Texas Legislature in the 2002 elections.

"The public officials people elect to represent them must do so honestly and ethically and if not, they will be held accountable," said Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg.

DeLay, 63, faces five to 99 years in prison for the money-laundering conviction and two to 20 years for a conspiracy count as well, plus fines. He is free on bond until his sentencing in a Texas state court on Dec 20.

47. Agreed
Delay's lawyers will take the case to the US Surpeme Court and of course their partners in crime the five (5) judges will over turn the verdict and probably will proclaim him a HERO.

Fake news, dummy Palin and crew, Murdock and crew will all proclaim it's Obama's fault and get the not too smart tea bats to come out to chant over and over again something stupid and the corporate media will pick it like it's the news. By the end of the week, it will be all Obama and the Dems fault b/c they are the Nazi.

149. He is employing the Kenny Boy Defense.
As you may recall, Ken Lay's conviction took so long, he died before his sentencing. This negated the conviction, which meant the government couldn't go after his estate for restitution. His heirs have continued to wallow in the lap of luxury ever since.

The strategy is to get high priced lawyers to delay (no pun intended) justice until after you're dead. He was indicted way back in 2005 and it was over five years before the trial started. Here it is almost to the end of 2011 and he hasn't been sentenced yet. Watch for his sentencing to be rescheduled past December 20.

How much longer can those expensive lawyers drag this out on appeals while he remains free on bail? He's 63 and the US life expectancy is 78. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see justice denied for 15 more years.

An average person would have been already rotting in jail six years ago. The older I get the less respect I have for our criminal justice system, and it is mainly on account of disparities just like this.

182. Ken Lay... I'd forgotten about that one
But then again all the rich are criminals. Their names and faces blend together in my mind sometimes. Fraudsters at minimum and murderers at worst. Thieving and stealing are part and parcel of Capitalism and the best thieves get the richest.

That is why we need to assault their compounds and place them all under citizens arrest for their crimes, garnish all their assets and put them and their family members off their golden thrones and put them to work sweeping the streets, picking up trash, cutting the grass along the highway, etc. That is the only justice I will accept.

How in hell we tolerate a society where the most evil, most egregious thieves, liars, con men and murderers are put up on a pedestal is beyond me. STORM THE BASTILLE!

After I had it all typed up I thought, maybe I shouldn't rain on this nice parade with such a negative post. Then I thought, what the hell, I can apologize for being a wet blanket if it bothers anybody.

Really, there is cause for rejoicing. At least Hot Tub Tom has been tagged with two felonies. That's better than nothing even if it's overturned on appeal. Too bad this didn't happen two or three months ago, in time to help Democrats in the election.

There are over 200,000 wealthy rich bastards that need to be imprisoned and forced to clean our streets, shine shoes for a nickle, pick up trash, all with shackles on. And all their ill gotten gains need to be seized and returned to their rightful owners.

How are they any different than a con man who swindles you out of your car. He goes to jail and does some hard time. But the con men that wear $8,000 suits walk around free as a bird. And the guy with your car, he doesn't get to pass your car along to his family members to have and to use and keep forever. But the con man in a suit keeps every stolen dollar and his family lives a life of fantasy and luxury.

Jail them all! Tear down their walls and arrest them for their crimes. That is where we need to be going as a nation.

Putting one out of 200,000 crooks away is just a show. Just another part of the Kabuki Theater of American life. Tom Delay may end up with a pardon -- I wouldn't put it past our President (and you can bet he won't serve a day of actual hard time anyway, his family won't be poor after all is said and done). He'll get Scooter Libby'd and that'll be that.

to a total takeover of government by his gang of phony sanctimonious criminals. The republican ethics lapses- Abramoff, k street, Ralph Reed all circling the exterminator. They are doing it again... trying to eliminate the impartial ethics committee set up by the Democrats to "drain the swamp". These guys are just evil- Delay one of the most corrupt. A jury saw through his phony excuses that he was just being politically prosecuted. No sir, you are a crook. Throw away the key.

Snip

Tom DeLay said he is being reassured by friends with daily Bible verses. Today’s is Romans 8:28 which DeLay says talks about, “No matter what your trials or tribulations are, everything is for the good for those chosen by the Lord.

“No demons, nor angels, nor district attorneys can keep you separated from the love of Jesus Christ.”

234. Juanita Jean is not alone
I've been subversively anti-DeLay the entire time I've lived in his district. When he was first indicted, I used my mixed media skills to make big banners that said "INDICTED!!!" in rainbow hues (pun intended), attached rainbows of helium balloons, and tied them to his district markers. I did this at about 4:30 in the morning the day after the news broke. My banners stayed the longest on the signs nearest I-45, which means the morning rush hour traffic got to see them. I have pics somewhere.

Anyway, I do hope he gets to spend a significant amount of time in a state prison, contemplating the lint in his navel.

Just a banner right now.

Edited to add story:

Update: 5 p.m.:

Tom DeLay, the former U.S. House majority leader whose name became synonymous with the Republicans’ controversial rise to power in the Texas House, was found guilty today of laundering money in connection with the 2002 elections.

Jurors sent a note on yellow legal paper that a verdict had been reached to the judge at 4:46 p.m. They had deliberated since Monday afternoon.

They sent word that they had reached a verdict at 4:46 p.m. today.

DeLay is also guilty of criminal intent to corrupt the English language. In this instance, it is a premeditated attempt to convert a long-standing honorable noun into an adjective. His heinous crime has since has been disseminated to the entire right-wing media, who have excised the proper term Democratic from their collective vocabularies.

A Texas jury Wednesday found Tom DeLay, the former House majority leader and Texas political powerhouse, guilty in a money-laundering trial involving contributions to political campaigns.

Jurors deliberated for 19 hours before they came back with guilty verdicts against Mr. DeLay on charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

But knowing the Thugs, they'll give him unsupervised probation for 1 day and let him go.

life , (well 99 years), would be excellent...but this could be as little as probation; that would be a kick in the face of justice.

One thing is for sure, if this was a D in the docket, DeLay would be screaming for his head, nice to see this miserable insect will finally get a dose of that karma he's been dealing out for years.

Justice DELAYed. Most of the country probably forgot what he was charged with. The media has not covered this story for some reason. I thought this case had gone away.

I am glad he has been finally caught. He was one of so many corrupt Republicans that the media chose to ignore.

But he did work hard for Corporate America so I'm sure he will be rewarded.

Don't know what to say, I hope he is only the first of many of our corrupt public officials to be charged with the crimes they have committed. Especially the war criminals.

He looks for the most partisan judge that will likely overrule anything the jury does if it doesn't go his/her way. That tells me that DeLay settled on the wrong judge. I just hope Pat Priest does the right thing and sentence him to 99 years in prison, first parole hearing in 50 years (he'll be a skeleton by then)

And he must serve time immediately. No credit for being free for 5 years.

He can appeal while he's serving time in prison - he's going to have to stay there and use a jailhouse attorney to write up failed pleas after pleas.

Edited on Wed Nov-24-10 09:52 PM by GreenTea
And greedy fools like DeLay believed every word of it.....Republicans had absolute control of the presidency, Congress, Senate, the Justice Department & US Supreme Court, they had complete control of the corporate media, complete control through HAVA of the electronic voting machine & their hackers (but Rove had to blow up the plane of the main hacking dude cuz he was going talk and tell all) and the republicans had all the corporate money they needed....

So Delay believed he was untouchable - So what changed?

116. So the real question remaining
Can the house, senate, or a governor pardon him?

Or will President Obama have to Pardon him?

Or will we have to wait for the president after Obama?

Or can they just retroactively change the law to get him off?

Cause I don't think he is in the business of doing jail time.

Also... 190k? Really? That's not even walking around money any more. Seeing what his crony's are doing now, that's gotta really make him feel a little injustice.

No other choice. What he did amounts to TREASON and should have been sentenced to death for it.

99 years in prison, first parole hearing in 50 years.

And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw
around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone.

Delay remains defiant after money laundering conviction

AUSTIN, Texas — During a 22-year career in the U.S. House, Tom DeLay helped build up the Republican Party's power - and, by extension, his own - through a combination of shrewd strategy and hardball tactics that earned him the nickname "The Hammer" and elevated him to the chamber's second-highest post.

But one such effort to shore up GOP clout also proved to be his undoing and could cost the former House majority leader his freedom.

DeLay was defiant Wednesday after a jury convicted him in what prosecutors alleged was a scheme to send more Republicans to Congress by funneling illegal corporate money to Texas legislative candidates in 2002.

Outside the courtroom, he complained about an "abuse of power" and "miscarriage of justice" from the jury in Austin, the most Democratic city in one of the most Republican states.

243. ""This is an abuse of power, it is a miscarriage of justice."--Tom Delay
Tom is the poster child of abuse of power, miscarriage of justice. Shrinks call it transference.

245. He won't serve a day........
This will go up on appeal. Because these were state charges he will first have to exhaust the Texas appeals process. Texas courts are packed with conservatives. They will drag this out for years until ultimately the Texas Supreme Court will mandate a state Tom Delay Holiday and order restitution to him and his family to the tune of millions. The entire time he will be free on bond with no restrictions on his political and other criminal activities.

The Texas legislature, meanwhile, may consider legislation that will prevent any political jurisdiction from appealing a decision of a Texas appellate or Supreme Court decision. Failing that this will go to the federal system.

We know from Citizens United that the conservative majority of the Supreme Court consider unlimited anonymous contributions to be political free speech.

So the Federal 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, loaded with conservatives will be bound by Citizens United and will find for De Lay.

In the rare case that the 5th Ct. does not find for De Lay we know the Roberts court will be swift to pardon Tom Delay and make the state of Texas reimburse him for all his pain and suffering (something they would never award to someone that was actually harmed as a result of corporate malfeasance) and mandate a new Tom Delay national holiday in his honor.

246. Not pardon...
The Supremes will not "pardon" De Lay as that is an executive power. They will find in De Lay's favor and send him back to Texas to continue his political games.
