International Transport Workers' FederationITF condemns possible airline interference in US union elections
25 November 2010
The ITF has denounced any possible illegal interference by US airline management in union election processes involving affiliates.
David Cockroft, ITF general secretary, said that there had been reports of “intense management pressure” on Delta Air Lines employees to vote against joining the ITF-affiliated US unions the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) and the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA). Last week, fleet service employees voted against signing up to the IAMAW, while on 3 November the AFA learnt that cabin crewmembers were opposed to joining the union.
It is understood that the IAMAW is investigating allegations that Delta interfered illegally in the voting process; the AFA has already filed charges of interference against the airline. It has also been reported that the company exerted pressure on employees by making them vote on company computers in work time and with supervisors nearby.
Cockroft commented: “The ITF condemns any hint of illegal interference by the company in union election processes and attempt deliberately to prevent employees from joining a union. Instead, Delta should accept the right of their workers to be represented.”
