In yet another acknowledgment of Democrats' recent drubbing and the tectonic political shift in Washington, President Obama used much of his Thanksgiving morning radio address to call for bipartisanship in tackling the country's persistent economic ails.

Just a day after expressing relief that he had prevented another November "shellacking" by sending two pardoned turkeys to live out their days at the Mount Vernon home of George Washington, the nation's 44th president argued that neither party could achieve meaningful economic change on its own.

Citing the urgency to "accelerate this recovery," Obama declared: "But we won't do it as one political party. We've got to do it as one people. And, in the coming weeks and months, I hope we can work together, Democrats and Republicans and independents alike, to make progress on these and other issues."

The president told his listeners about a scheduled White House meeting next week with congressional leaders from both parties, a get-together already delayed once, and one intended, he said, to yield "a real and honest discussion." Thorny discussions await on matters including whether to permit Bush-era tax cuts to expire for the wealthy and consideration of the START nuclear treaty. In a reference to the challenges of navigating the divide, Obama said, "I believe that if we stop talking at one another, and start talking with one another, we can get a lot done." . . .

Actually, maybe Obama should ally with the TeaBagger Republicans on issues like earmarks. If the establishment GOP see Obama as politically astute enough to get some TeaBaggers on his side, then they will listen up.

Obama should invite all the first year Democratic members of Congress to the White House for an exchange of ideas.

Then he should invite all the first year Republican members of Congress to the White House to get their ideas.

He should try to glean the best of the newcomers' ideas and work them into some of his policies. The Republican Party old guard needs to go. Some of the TeaBaggers' ideas are reprehensible, but there are bound to be a few acceptable ones. Obama should be very good at this. This might be the approach he could take to make some friends among the newbies in Congress who are not yet entrenched in the non-bipartisanship quite so much.

I realize that the TeaBaggers came into office on agendas that vilify Obama personally and that some of them are downright stupid and others insane, but there may be a couple who could be worked with. If Obama can find them and give them a boost, he might actually be able to penetrate the Gingrich Republicans who are just there to block progress.

bipartisanship? I am opposed to everything Republicans stand for. They are morally and intellectually bankrupt. Every time he decides to be bipartisan it means we are compromising our position and accepting theirs. Should we negotiate with them? If necessary. That is it. But it is negotiation, and that implies opposition. The mere fact that he wants bipartisanship means that he thinks those numbnuts actually have some good ideas. They don't. They have proven that.

The votes? He isn't going to get them. He could give them everything they want and they would still vote against him. He would have to promise to dismantle Social Security, eliminate Medicare, provide everyone over 250,000 a 0 rate in taxes, and then kick in his own impeachment. Then the Republicans would find just enough "moderate Republicans" to get it passed, and then target those "moderate Republicans" and replace them with the nuttiest of the right wing-nuts in the next election.

Quick anecdote: I was going through couple counseling. Things were not going well, to say the least. Our couple counselor tried a tactic. He had us stand on either side of the room and then meet half way. Well, I met half way, my wife came out a quarter. He said try it again from where you are. I went half way, she stepped back and so on. After doing this technique three or four times - always with the same result - , the therapist looked at me and asked "what have you learned from this." I said, "I need to learn to compromise." The therapist said "if you think any compromise is possible, I think you need a new couple counselor." From that point on, we started working on divorce.
I think Obama needs to talk to my former couple counselor. He is as co-dependent on the Republicans as I was on my ex.

And for some reason, I still think he can get it together and be really great. I think both of us need our heads examined. Sorry for the rant.

This is also a holiday that captures that distinctly American impulse to give something of ourselves. Even as we speak, there are countless Americans serving at soup kitchens and food pantries; contributing to their communities; and standing guard around the world.

And in a larger sense, that’s emblematic of what Americans have always done. We come together and do what’s required to make tomorrow better than today. That’s who we are.

Consider our journey since that first Thanksgiving. We are among the world’s youngest of peoples, but time and again, we have boldly and resiliently led the way forward. Against tough odds, we are a people who endure – who explored and settled a vast and untamed continent; who built a powerful economy and stood against tyranny in all its forms; who marched and fought for equality, and connected a globe with our own science and imagination.

None of that progress was predestined. None of it came easily. Instead, the blessings for which we give thanks today are the product of choices made by our parents, and grandparents, and generations before – whose determination and sacrifice ensured a better future for us.

This holiday season, we must resolve once more to do the same.
