SEOUL: South Korea and Australia have urged China to adopt a stronger stance against North Korea after Tuesday's attack on Yeonpyeong island left four people dead.

China, the North's sole major ally, has failed to join international condemnation of Pyongyang for the attack.

The Korea Times called on China to "behave as a responsible member of the international community", saying the world's second largest economy must become pro-active regionally and globally.

"This is not the Cold War era but North Korea is still living with a Cold
War mentality. Without peace on the Korean peninsula, China's prosperity will
also be in jeopardy," the Times said.

It is heating up people.

And from a BBC commenter on the morn... analysts believe Beijing does not have that much pull over N. Korea...

So let's hope we don't go into Guns of August scenario, the absolute worst case... there are way too many defense pacts that could and will be triggered if hostilities resume.

1. I keep wondering if I'm gonna be subject to Nuclear fallout sometime this weekend
I'm just across the way from Korea. In fact, if there were nukes used, I think on a clear day I could see it from my friend's rooftop.

2. This event is not yet understood in the global strategic context
The US is pursuing a global anti China policy. It has over the last nine years built a constellation of bases and treaty relationships in Asia aimed at choking the Chinese off from the rest of Asia and the world. There are contested maritime claims not only with respect to North Korea, but also Vietnam and Japan, in which the US consistently takes the anti China position. US aggression in Asia with respect to Afghanistan and Pakistan are also an issue. There are also the strategic overtures to India which are clearly intended to intimidate China. In this situation, China will not curtail N. Korean action. Kim Jong Il was recently in China and I'm sure the situation of S.Korean and US territorial provocation in the Yellow Sea region was discussed.

The current S Korean president precipitated these episodes of fighting on the Korean maritime border by repudiating international agreement negotiated by former South Korean President Kim Dae Jung.

Tim Shorrock explains in Democracy Now interview:

The US press and public view these matters with tunnel vision, blissfully unaware of their own aggression in Asia and their ridiculously unrealistic plans for world dominance.
