Iraqi gas pipeline on fire after blast
BAIJI, Iraq (AFX)

A gas pipeline supplying a key Baghdad power station IS reported on fire this morning near the northern Iraqi refinery town of Baiji, following an overnight explosion, an Agence France-Presse correspondent on the scene reported.

"It was a gas pipeline going from Kirkuk (in northern Iraq) to Tadji" power station, an engineer in Baiji said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

US military helicopters have been seen hovering over the fire 4 km west of Baiji.

The site is one of strategic pipelines in Iraq's massive oil and gas sector. ---

4. Don't jump to conclusions.
It said that this was a gass pipe line heading to a power plant. Most likly supplng fuel for electricity. If it was natral gass, than poor mantaince would explane the explosion and resulting fire.

6. ‘Could,’ you mean.
There are several possible explainations... I find that poor worksmanship would probably be one of the least ones, considering that it's likely that as soon as Bagdahd fell, we had people out there inspecting them.

11. Accident or Sabotage
Accidents do happen, but I would not be surprised if this turns out to be sabotage by Iraqi resistance fighters. We are doing a piss-poor job on the "hearts and minds" front, electrical outages, gas shortages, no law & order etc. and the resistance people know that knocking out the fuel to an electrical power plant will do a lot to stir up further resentment against the occupiers.

10. Who was it that had the contract to rebuild...
all those wells and pipelines that in the end were NOT damaged? I wonder if they know how this pipeline came to be burning?
