Italy's embattled Berlusconi calls rally of support

ROME — Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi called Saturday for a rally of support ahead of parliamentary votes on his embattled government, as critics mocked its claim of a plot to destroy Italy's image.

Centre-right Berlusconi, who has been fighting off a series of scandals, called for a "big, big demonstration and a collection of signatures of support" in Rome on December 11 and 12.

He faces confidence votes in both the lower and upper houses of parliament on December 14 and, according to the Italian constitution, a loss in either house would force him to resign.

Berlusconi is believed to hold a majority in the upper house but only a minority in the lower house.
