U.S.-South Korea military exercises begin: U.S. official
Sat Nov 27, 2010 6:39pm EST

SEOUL (Reuters) - Joint exercises between the U.S. and South Korean militaries have begun in the Yellow Sea, west of the Korean peninsula, an official from U.S. Forces Korea said on Sunday.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington has joined the exercise, the official told Reuters.

Regional giant China has expressed displeasure against the exercise while North Korea has said the consequences could not be predicted.

8. I was thinking about this analogy earlier. It's an acceptable one.
We should at least take a moment to ponder such analogies before skipping over to the dreaded fear of Americans because of their blue jeans.

9. In this case, it is worth understanding that unlike Iraq and Afghanistan, ...
...the North Koreans are A) Crazy and B) Have ballistic missiles technically capable of reaching Hawaii and parts of the Western United States. It is a shame that absolutely bullshit, illegal, wars like the one in Iraq have made us cynical to the point of apathy when it comes to real dangers by very real menaces.

I don't necessarily blame you for that cynicism.

What the U.S. does in Afghanistan directly affects every American.

What the U.S. does in the Koreas directly affects every American.

And then, of course, there are all those innocent Koreans.

Source: Reuters feed (Globe and Mail Canada)

North Korea has placed surface-to-surface missiles on launch pads in the Yellow Sea, Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday, as the United States and South Korea began joint military exercises.

The agency said also that Pyongyang had moved surface-to-air missiles to frontline areas. The North’s offical KCNA news agency warned of retaliatory action if its territory was violated.

19. the game of chicken begins...
Korea deploys SA-2 surface-to-air missiles near Yellow Sea border

SEOUL, Nov. 28 (Yonhap) — North Korea has deployed SA-2 surface-to-air missiles to its west coast near the Yellow Sea border with South Korea as U.S.-led naval drills got underway in a show of force against the North’s deadly artillery attack on a South Korean island earlier last week, government sources said Sunday.

“(The missiles) appear to be targeting our fighter jets that fly near the Northern Limit Line (NLL),” the source said on customary condition of anonymity, referring to the Yellow Sea border.

The Soviet-designed SA-2 missile has a range of between 13 and 30 kilometers. Other missiles on the North's west coast, such as the Samlet and Silkworm with ranges of up to 95km, have also been put onto launch pads, the source said.

Because no matter what happens, he can't do anything right. Patriotism in the face of an external enemy doesn't apply when a Democrat is in the White House. (Remember the wars in the Balkans in the 1990s?)

29. Al Jazeera English: S Korea-US begin military exercises

North Korea places surface-to-surface missiles on launch pads as US and South Korea kick off joint military exercises.
Last Modified: Nov 28 2010 05:23 GMT

=snip=

'Ensuing consequences'

North Korea's KCNA news agency said on Saturday: "If the US brings its carrier to the West Sea of Korea at last, no one can predict the ensuing consequences."

China has said it was determined to prevent an escalation of the violence in the Koreas and warned against military acts near its coast.

"The Chinese have made it very very clear that they didn’t want these drills to occur at all," Al Jazeera's Ortigas said.

China had made it clear to South Korea and the US that it "could not be responsible for what North Korea might do" if they went ahead with the military exercise, she added.

China's dirty secret is they have NO control over North Korea, they only pretend they do to perpetuate the myth so they have a bargaining chip on the world stage. The world only thinks they do. In fact their relations with NK aren't even that great.

If China had control, we would not be in this mess at all. China wants peace on their borders. A war means a flood of refugees it doesn't want and explosions are bad for business.

38. Tick...tick...tick...
I, a Conservative, approve of Obama's handling of this. He's not letting the NorKs get away with intimidation or coercion tactics. He didn't move the carrier group like last time, in fact more ships were added and we publicly stated our intent to continue the exercises. Which we are now following through on.

Good. For. Him.

I pray however, for a miraculous drawdown of hostilities. My Brother-in-law is still "in". This Thanksgiving, he had his gear in his truck.

His unit is the GRF.

Global Reaction Force.

Peace would be a great Christmas present this year, but no one can afford anything right now...

40. U.S. and South Korea Begin Joint Naval Exercises.
Source: nyt

The United States and South Korea began naval exercises on Sunday that were meant as a warning to North Korea for recent provocations, including last week’s deadly artillery attack on a island populated by South Koreans in the Yellow Sea.

At the same time, China stepped up its diplomatic efforts to cool tempers in the region, with a senior envoy holding a meeting on Sunday morning with South Korea’s president and Beijing announcing that it had invited a senior North Korean official for talks this week.

North Korean artillery was heard Sunday on the island, though no shells landed there and South Korea considered it just a drill, according to a spokesman for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. The North Koreans also shot off artillery on Friday, after a visit by an American general to the island, called Yeonpyeong.
