Palin Hauls in Nearly $500k In Just Over a Month
Source: TIME

Sarah Palin raised $469,000 between Oct. 13 and Nov. 22 bringing her total for the year to over $3 million, Tim Crawford, SarahPAC's treasurer, told TIME exclusively. Crawford attributed the surge of funds to energy surrounding the midterm elections, Palin's endorsements and her TLC reality show “Sarah Palin's Alaska.” Her second book, America By Heart, came out Nov. 23.

The PAC spent $64,000 buying advance copies of her books, “just as we did last year” with her first book, Going Rogue, Crawford said. “They're a great fundraising tool for us.” Palin is in the midst of a two-week cross-country book tour.

Overall the PAC spent $581,000 between Oct. 13 and Nov. 22. A larger percentage than normal was spent on contributions to political candidates, $244,000, as Palin tried to help her 81-endosed candidates over the Nov. 2 finish line. Fifty-five of them won.

All of the $469,000 was raised online or through direct mail. The former Alaska governor has had only two fundraisers for her PAC this year – the last one this past summer -- compared to Mitt Romney's nine. Crawford expects to file his report to the Federal Election Commission this afternoon.

3. I WANT AN AUDIT OF ALL $469,000 DOWN TO THE LAST CENT!
I want to know how much was spent on blue ink; how many ballpoint pens were purchased.

How fuc*kin convenient that she buys copies of her own book to use as "fund-raising" tools.

I bet she cashed that royalty check already!

Audit the piss out of this woman; I don't care how many taxpayer dollars it takes!

18. Why?
To what end? I'm not trying to be pissy here or anything, but what good would an audit do? There's absolutely nothing illegal in what she's done, having her PAC buy the book and then (presumably) give them away in exchange for donations. Hillary Clinton did the same thing with her book back in '04. One may question the ethics of doing such a thing, but audits are not about ethics.

Pretty much every published author gets SOME bulk copies for their own personal use. My brother got several hundred in bulk for his last published work to give away, which he used as a marketing tool for the work he's writing right now. My wife got a couple of dozen bulk copies of her last three books to give away to family and friends.

So, if you go off and insist upon an audit, all you actually wind up doing is giving her more attention. You can never hope to actually prove something illegal (or even unethical) about this, and in the end she just gets the attention she's after. Oh, and her book sales probably increase because of the added buzz of people talking about her getting audited over this book. It's the "forbidden fruit" syndrome: people who otherwise would have had no interest whatsoever in buying her book decide on impulse to pick it up in the airport or order it off of B&N or whatever JUST BECAUSE everyone is talking about it.

Best thing in the whole wide world you can do is just pretend she isn't even there.

21. One unethical thing about this...
Yes, most authors get a few boxes of advance copies of their books to use as marketing tools. That's not a problem.

What IS a problem, is Palin's $64,000 book buy alters the sales figures. On this site we are very much against people like Richard Mellon Scaife gaming the sales figures by bulk buying right-wing books. Palin is doing the exact same thing.

And the thing is, Palin doesn't actually need to do this--she is popular enough among the Right that her book can make number one on the sales lists without bulk buys.

8. No, she can't.
I assume the book is literally about her long struggle to learn the word "America", if not how to spell it.

19. Wow, why is anyone giving her money???
There must really be some sort of psychological illness at work here.

She isn't running for office and she's a millionaire already - yet poor American's just send her money. Maybe there really isn't a recession after all.
