Jimmy Carter pays visit to Obama
Source: The Hill

Former President Jimmy Carter paid a surprise visit to President Obama while at the White House on Tuesday.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters during his daily press briefing that Obama invited the 39th president to "stop in" after his scheduled meeting with National Security Adviser Tom Donilon.

<...>

In an interview with CBS News that aired Tuesday, Carter encouraged Obama to "be more independent" and not feel obligated to reach out to Republicans.

"In the next two years, President Obama will be much more independent in fighting hard to prevail and not trying to reach out, which turned out to be fruitlessly, to get two or three Republican votes for this and that," the one-term president said. "I think he'll be a much more tough proponent of what he stands for in the future, giving up on Republicans support and taking his case to the American public."

9. Fingers crossed and hope past is not prologue. Results,
Obama. Results.

Squandering a supermajority does NOT give you cover. It just makes it more difficult for the back half.

Kudos, Pres. JC, if true.

12. Carter Not Allowed to Speak at the 2008 Democratic National Convention
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 06:11 PM by WizardLeft62
President Obama and Jimmy Carter are not "good friends" at all. Carter really has not reached out to Obama very much except in various interviws, and vice-versa. As a matter of fact Obama did not allowed former President Carter to speak which is a formality for all ex-presidents to speak at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. This showed an arrogant side of Obama which few wanted to admit at the time and a total disrespect of a former Democratic President Carter who is an honorable man. Therefore, I am surprised Obama invited him over for a visit but not really seeing that Carter was in town. I doubt Obama went out of his way to personally invite Carter to the White House for an official visit. Had Carter not been in Washington, I highly doubt that Obama would be concerned with his (Carter's) presence, in town. As written at the time was the tight control of the propaganda messging by the Obama campaign:

Obama Silences Party Members with Tight Grip on Democratic National Convention
By Julie Kent. Published on 08/27/2008 -

"...Members of Congress and others that have been asked to speak at the convention must have their speeches approved by the Obama campaign, and according to Democratic sources the speeches are drastically changed, to the point where the original speech is almost entirely scrapped.

The level of controlled propaganda present at this convention is almost certainly draining the life out of the DNC this year. Few of the speeches, save for Hillary Clinton's last night, have been exciting. Most have been downright snooze-inducing advertisements for Obama. Cleveland's own Dennis Kucinich was relegated to a sub-prime time speaking slot, and had a key line struck from his speech which lashed out at the Bush administration. The line that was removed, which addressed Republicans, read: "They’re asking for another four years — in a just world, they’d get 10 to 20." That would have certainly gotten a round of applause.

Jimmy Carter was also yanked from what was supposed to be a live speech....At the last minute Carter's live speech was swapped out for a prerecorded video, and a 90 second appearance on stage in which he was only allowed to wave his hands..."

18. From what we know of PRESIDENT Obama's ...
decision-making/leadership style, I would suspect that he listened to, and debated with, and took to heart what President Carter had to say.

However I do not expect, nor do I want, PRESIDENT Obama to drop the reaching out/bipartisan-building attempts. I would far rather PRESIDENT Obama to say, "This is where we are going ... Who's joining me?" And use the veto pen, if/when Congress does not follow. (Which is his job)

But have Congressional Democrats do their jobs ... You know, actually write the legislation, preferably to the Left of where PRESIDENT Obama said, and bring stuff to the floor for a vote.

19. The election is over, I guess Obama feels it's safe now be seen with Carter.
History looks more favorably at Jimmy Carter's Presidency with each passing year. Obama has two years left to save his presidency and make it worth something.
