Tea Party Nation President Says It ‘Makes A Lot Of Sense’ To Restrict Voting Only To Property Owners

Every week, the Tea Party Nation hosts a weekly radio program, calling itself a “home for conservatives.” Two weeks ago, Tea Party Nation President Judson Phillips hosted the program and discussed changes that he felt should be made to voting rights in the United States. He explained that the founders of the country originally put “certain restrictions on who gets the right to vote.” He continued, “One of those was you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense, because if you’re a property owner you actually have a vested stake in the community. If you’re not a property owner, you know, I’m sorry but property owners have a little bit more of a vested interest in the community than non-property owners”:

PHILLIPS: The Founding Fathers originally said, they put certain restrictions on who gets the right to vote. It wasn’t you were just a citizen and you got to vote. Some of the restrictions, you know, you obviously would not think about today. But one of those was you had to be a property owner. And that makes a lot of sense, because if you’re a property owner you actually have a vested stake in the community. If you’re not a property owner, you know, I’m sorry but property owners have a little bit more of a vested interest in the community than non-property owners.

10. I think this is a great idea!
Let the people with property pay all the taxes!

Because, of course, the whole point of the original Boston Tea Party was that there should be 'no taxation without representation'.

If I don't get to vote because I don't own any property, then I shouldn't be taxed for anything either.

If I don't own property and don't have any representation in the local, state and federal legislatures, then I shouldn't have to pay sales taxes, property taxes, income taxes, etc.

And, this ought to be extended even farther -- only those who own property and who have a "vested stake" should be trusted enough to actually go fight in the wars that they have to pay for!

Which reminds me of a joke a friend of mine posted on another site

Did you know that:
The words "race car" spelled backwards still spells "race car"?

"Eat" is the only word that, if you take the first letter and move it to the
last, spells its past tense, "ate

And if you rearrange the letters in "so-called Tea Party Republicans," and add
just a few more letters, it spells: "Shut the fuck up, you freeloading,
progress-blocking, benefit-grabbing, resource-sucking, violent, hypocritical
douche bags, and deal with the fact that our president is black and that you
nearly wrecked the country under Bush."

I keep it in a rv park close to my job since my home is about 100 miles from my job, that way I don't have to commute every day. My neighbor at the park is a certified teabagger, nice enough guy but just way off the cliff politically.

I printed this article out at the office today and gave it to him when I saw him earlier this evening. I just saw him a few minutes ago and he said "you don't suppose a beat up '77 Winnebago makes me a vote worthy property owner do you?"

I answered him "what do you think?"

he says <paraphrased>
"I think I'm out, if this is how they look at the rank and file, I'm out. After my wife died I sold our little old house and started travelling, couldn't stand to be there anymore, so what does that make me, worthless? Just because I don't own a house anymore? Fuck 'em, if that's what this so called movement is going to be about, I'm out. "

I hope more of them get it, I really do. This whole farce never had a damn thing to do with the common folks, just another republican ploy to get people to vote against their own interests :grr:

61. The repukes have perfected the art of getting the lemmings to vote against their own best interests.
Edited on Wed Dec-01-10 07:59 AM by BrklynLiberal
http://markmaynard.com/?p=7501

<snip>

The best part of the article is the contribution by Thomas Frank, the author of What’s the Matter with Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America. Here’s a highlight:

….Right-wing politics has become a vehicle for channelling this popular anger against intellectual snobs. The result is that many of America’s poorest citizens have a deep emotional attachment to a party that serves the interests of its richest.

Thomas Frank says that whatever disadvantaged Americans think they are voting for, they get something quite different:

“You vote to strike a blow against elitism and you receive a social order in which wealth is more concentrated than ever before in our life times, workers have been stripped of power, and CEOs are rewarded in a manner that is beyond imagining… It’s like a French Revolution in reverse in which the workers come pouring down the street screaming more power to the aristocracy.”

As Mr Frank sees it, authenticity has replaced economics as the driving force of modern politics. The authentic politicians are the ones who sound like they are speaking from the gut, not the cerebral cortex. Of course, they might be faking it, but it is no joke to say that in contemporary politics, if you can fake sincerity, you have got it made.

And here, according to the author of the article, is the big takeaway message from all of this… “If people vote against their own interests, it is not because they do not understand what is in their interest or have not yet had it properly explained to them. They do it because they resent having their interests decided for them by politicians who think they know best. There is nothing voters hate more than having things explained to them as though they were idiots. As the saying goes, in politics, when you are explaining, you are losing. And that makes anything as complex or as messy as healthcare reform a very hard sell.”
