A feisty Gov. Gray Davis, calling the recall effort against him "B.S., " received a positive jolt Thursday from news that Sen. Hillary Clinton will campaign for him next week -- and the assurance of the national Democratic Party chairman that Sen. Dianne Feinstein will not appear as a candidate on the recall ballot.
Davis also challenged the "millionaire" Republicans who may run in the Oct. 7 recall election to pledge to reimburse taxpayers for the cost of the election should he defeat the recall effort.
Among the wealthy Republicans considering a campaign are actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, businessman Bill Simon, whom Davis beat in the November 2002 election, former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan, Rep. Darrell Issa of Vista (San Diego County) and former Rep. Michael Huffington.
"Should they lose, I challenge them to pledge to reimburse the taxpayers an amount equal to the amount they spend on their campaigns. This will help the taxpayers defray the cost of this extraordinarily expensive recall election," Davis said.
