Christie defends blizzard vacation

Gov. Christie, who was criticized for vacationing in Florida as a blizzard pummeled the East Coast, defended his trip and praised the state's response to the storm, which dumped nearly three feet of snow in some areas.

Speaking Friday at his first news conference since returning home, Christie said he made all major decisions on the state's response in consultation with Senate President Stephen Sweeney. Sweeney, a Democrat, was serving as acting governor after Christie, a Republican, left the state Sunday morning, hours before snow started to fall heavily.

"We did not have any significant loss of life," Christie said, calling it an "extraordinary accomplishment."

He said on Friday that when his wife heard about the storm she said "Don't even think about cancelling the vacation." In response to the several mayors who complained that they had to use municipal funds to clear state roads he said that they were basically just bitching because they didn't do their jobs. WTF?
He's a bully and he's following the typical repug game plan of never apologizing (George Bush, anyone?) but this is not casting him in a good light. And He keeps making it worse the more he talks about it. Any significant loss of life? Did he really say that?

Christie is a horse's ass...and his size 54 belt line is going to be responsible for screwing over his state and the services to the most vulnerable in his state, just so he can claim nice tax preservation to his wealthy cronies. Agree that the Disney/Mexico trips are a side issue. A "real" issue would be the reduction of state aid to municipalities and the effect that smaller budgets had on the response to the blizzard.

Christie's opponents can find plenty of ammunition to use against him on issues more substantive than his various travel foibles. His inept handling of NJ's Race to the Top application was one recent blunder. Kind of a win-win for folks that despise both RTTT and Governor Christie.

Another issue surfacing at this time is the connection of prominent Christie aides with Reform Jersey Now. While not likely to be a big deal, it does tend to undermine the reform-minded federal prosecutor narrative that has been part of Christie's political appeal.
