Group of Professional Immigrants Opens Free Clinic
Source: AP

A group of immigrants who have opened a free clinic in Wichita say they are trying to give back to the country that has helped make them successful.

The Mayflower Clinic offers a full range of medical care for people who are between jobs or temporarily without health insurance, rather than the chronically unemployed or homeless.

Abdul Arif, a lawyer who is native of India, says the clinic is run by immigrants, many of whom are doctors.

1. Immigrant Professionals. Not Professional Immigrants.

4. It's like "professional drunk" versus "drunk professional."
It's nice they have a free clinic. It's like one of Gramsci's alternative institutions.

5. Nice concept, but why exclude the chronically unemployed or homeless? Are they unworthy?
Edited on Mon Jan-03-11 02:25 PM by freshwest
This is why we need universal health care based on being a human being and not part of the workforce.

Because the vast majority of unemployed, chronically unemployed or homeless tried to prevent that and want to work. And being sick leads to them being unable to work. Vicious cycle.

This is another philanthropic move dressed up in political correctness and accepting immigrants. I understand too, that they might be overwhelmed by the greater hordes of those they won't treat, according to the story. It's a band aid.

But thanks for bringing the story here. Patchwork is all we have until we have justice for all people.

10. They're helping somebody with needs.
It's their time, their service, and the need is unmet.

The same question--"Are they unworthy?" could be asked of the nouveau poor between jobs.

Private philanthropy is good and helps build civil society and social capital. Not all philanthropy has to be governmental. If you only have governmental organizations you wind up with a starkly divided society where pretty much everybody is powerless except to the extent they control the government. Not a good thing for a free society.
