Southwest Riverside News NetworkPalm Springs Police Chief David Dominguez, who recently apologized for making insensitive remarks during a sting operation that targeted gay men in the Warm Sands neighborhood, announced his resignation today.
“After careful consideration of the events surrounding the Warm Sands undercover operation, I believe this decision is in the best interest of my family, the city and the Police Department,” Dominguez said.
... City Manager David Ready said a search for a new chief would begin immediately, and he would ask the City Council tonight to authorize the creation of a Chief Recruitment Selection Committee. He said the panel would be made up of residents, business and civic leaders, police and justice system representatives and members of the gay and lesbian community.
... Dominguez came under fire after a June 2009 operation in the Warm Sands neighborhood. The sting, which netted 19 arrests, was done in response to what police said were complaints about drug use, public sex and prostitution in Warm Sands. However, it drew complaints that police were targeting gay men unfairly.
