Obama threatens to veto healthcare repeal

President Obama officially drew a line in the sand Thursday evening, threatening to veto House Republicans' attempt to repeal Obama's landmark healthcare law.

In a statement of administration policy released by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the administration said that repeal would "would explode the deficit, raise costs for the American people and businesses, deny an estimated 32 million people health insurance, and take us back to the days when insurers could deny, limit or drop coverage for any American."

Using the preliminary budget numbers Democrats seized upon on Thursday morning, OMB said that a preliminary analysis said that repeal would raise the "deficit by $230 billion in the first decade and roughly one-half of one percent of GDP, or over a trillion dollars, in the second decade."

"Repealing the Affordable Care Act would not only increase deficits in the coming decade, but would also significantly worsen the long-term fiscal burdens on American businesses and families," OMB said.

8. It will never get to that point according to Wendell Potter. He says the insurance

companies don't want it reversed, therefor the Republicans don't, either. That this was purely a political scare tactic to gain votes during the mid-term. He said the real objective is to get it to the point where they can tweak it removing the parts that ARE helpful to the populace -- no pre-existing condition exclusions, no cap on services, etc. Plus with the OAC's report no way could they seriously repeal it. The radio host, Leslie Marshall, said she read their "plan" which was essentially to go back to how it was in 2008 -- about 2 pages long. That kind of backs up what Potter says about them not being serious about totally overturning it.

But if it WERE to get to that point, I have no doubt that Obama would veto it in an instant -- he fought too hard for what he did get and it helps too many people to just let it go. :shrug:

BTW. Wendell Potter called these people evil. :7 And he has a brand new book out.

that NO WHERE in the health care bill is it referred to as Obamacare!

They need to bitch slap this down and have needed to from the beginning.

By allowing the right to phrase this in their terms, they are empowering the propaganda aspect and are hurting Americans who need healthcare.

Any GOP "backdoor repeal" measure--using the power of the purse to prevent the HCR law from functioning--needs to be vetoed as well.

But as someone upthread pointed out, the insurance companies are generally happy with the HCR law as it stands. In the pre-HCR era, a lot of people who could have afforded health insurance policies didn't buy them because, with deductibles and copays being what they are, they couldn't afford to use a health insurance policy. Since there's no real deductible control or copay control in this law, now those people will buy policies they can't use. All those unusable policies are going to mitigate, at least somewhat, the financial effects of that law.

It doesn't matter that the Republicans don't have anyone left who knows how to write a real bill, nor that whatever partisan crap they pass will be ignored and left to rot by the Democratic Senate.

No, even then, the President gets to come out and take a swipe at the issue, which the President has carefully chosen to be one of half a dozen issues that split 70-30 among the voting population, once they know about it.

So every time the GOP passes an otherwise worthless article such as this, two voters out of ten get moved from the Republican column to the Democratic column... for the next two years.
