China to make visits to elderly parents compulsory

China plans to introduce a law that will make visits to the elderly parents by their children compulsory.

Under the terms of the draft legislation, “elderly people who are ignored by their children can go to a court to claim their legal rights to be physically looked after,” China Daily reported Thursday.

The current law on Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Aged will be amended to include the latest provision said Wu Ming, an official with the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

There has been no amendment since it came into effect in 1996.

When the new law takes effect, the court can no longer reject cases lodged by the elderly who lack proper care from their children, said Wu. He said emphasis has been made in the document that family members cannot mentally ignore or isolate the aged, and children who live independently should often visit their parents.

1. In China elections should be compulsory

They should have free and fair elections, with compulsory voting, to allow the Chinese people to decide if these government officials deserve to be in office. The free and fair elections should of course be coupled to freedom of expression, a free press, elimination of the Great Firewall so the Chinese people have free access to the internet, and the separation of the Communist Party oligarchs from the government.

I can't imaging having to look after my parents. The very idea is enough for me to opt for jail time rather than speak to them again.

9. China's strategy to cut corners and avoid social security measures.

This is a dream plan to right-wingers - pass the obligation onto the people with no support. What point is "visiting" if there are no personal resources to share? I understand China is a developing country, but it must decide soon to provide more to the people and stop the policy of diverting all resources to saving and investment.
