Al Jazeera EnglishEgyptian police have been accused of beating a man to death in the city of Alexandria.
Sayyed Bilal's family said on Friday that the 31-year-old died in hospital after injuries sustained during torture by the officers.
Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from Alexandria, said that the family told her that Bilal was arrested on Tuesday night with "no official reason" given, although his brother, Ibrahim, believes he was arrested in connection with the bombing of a Coptic church on January 1 which killed at least 21 people.
Ibrahim Bilal said that he received a call on Wednesday from a hospital official telling him that his brother was dying, but when he arrived he was already dead. he said that the body bore the signs of torture.
He told our correspondent that he believes that his brother was arrested "because he is a Salafist (a follower of an Islamic movement)".
