At Dr. Phil’s behest, ‘golden-voiced’ man to check into rehab
Source: MSNBC

Ted Williams, the formerly homeless man who became a viral sensation for his “golden voice,” has decided to check into rehab after taping television segments with Dr. Phil during which family members allege that, despite his claims of sobriety, he has been drinking daily.

During the tapings, Williams and Dr. Phil had a lengthy one-on-one conversation about his addictions. Highlights from that conversation will air on the "Dr. Phil" show on Thursday.

“If Ted is ever going to get better, he’s got to be honest with himself and admit he’s addicted to drugs and alcohol,” Dr. Phil said in a statement. “I’ve told him it’s not going to be easy and it’s going to take a lot of hard work. It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction.”

Williams, 53, and one of his daughters were detained by police on Monday after a family quarrel, Williams told NBC News. Members of Williams' family had reunited in Los Angeles for the first time in years for the "Dr. Phil" appearance.

The Los Angeles Police Department told TODAYshow.com that two people were detained around 9 p.m. PT Monday because of an alleged "yelling altercation."

That's good. Good luck Mr. Williams, I think the sudden fame was a bit too much to quickly.

1. I may not watch Dr. Phil, but this is a good idea...
... I know that anyone thrust into the spotlight like this fellow is bound to fall hard, unless he's got the tools. Even then, it's one day at a time.

It was a bit too creepy the way things were going. Let it be the come back story of 2011, please.

3. I think Dr Phil tends toward authoritarian thuggery, but I also agree.
Access to money and all that it can buy means access to substances to abuse. Helping a person make the transition by skills training and support in a clinic is a great way to make his change circumstance work over the long run.

10. The Phil guy is not qualified to give advice of this nature.
He should be locked up. OW made a mistake bringing him on her show.

6. Most celebrities drink and have dysfunctional familes, so he should just fit in well.
His family is probably jealous and wants to keep him down and
in his place.

Don't fall for it, Mr. Golden Voice... yelling is not a crime.

12. Dr. Phil = self righteous, self-promoting headline grabber.
Yet, my sig line is a paraphrase of one of his lines. People with faults up the yin yang can still be right now and again.

However, why is this so public? No way to help someone or make a point to the public without public humiliation of obviously fragile humans?

Wel, yes, there are discreet ways, but how would they advantage Dr. Phil or Harpo Productions?

13. I knew when Williams hit the big time that Oprah wasn't far behind...
...in the guise of Dr. Phil. And no wonder Williams is in such a mess. You can't go from being an addict on the streets to the toast of the town in about a week and not have some kind of relapse. Here's hoping, though, that the man finally gets the help he needs and he's able to make the most of his talents. I have every confidence that he will.
