The attorney for former House leader Tom DeLay said on Thursday he is preparing a series of motions to appeal and overturn DeLay's conviction on conspiracy and money laundering charges.

Dick DeGuerin said in an interview from his Houston office that he is confident that DeLay will never spend a day in prison.

"I believe we will win the appeal, I believe his name will be cleared," DeGuerin said.

DeGuerin is one of the good guys, and enjoys a sterling reputation in the Texas legal community. It's no surprise that with his nuts on the line, DeLay would hire DeGuerin to defend him. What I see in these comments is a zealot advocate, one I'd hire myself. What I also see is a client who hasn't paid his bill yet, and an attorney keeping his eye on the bottom line. I could be wrong about that, but I'll say it anyway.

This appeals process will be drug out for years and he will remain free in the interim.

When and if his appeal is not successful, whoever the then governor of Texas will immediately pardon him or at a minimum commute his sentence. Then Delay will be invited to a big party at the Texas governor's mansion in his honor and he will be given the combination to the GOP party money safe.
