Fla. Haitians protest Duvalier's return to Haiti

MIAMI -- Some Haitians in Miami are protesting the return of an ousted dictator to their Caribbean homeland.

The political group Veye Yo is planning a protest rally Monday afternoon in Miami's Little Haiti. The group says Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier must be brought to justice.

Duvalier made a surprise return to Haiti on Sunday as the country copes with a political crisis, widespread cholera and the stalled reconstruction from last year's earthquake.

He was ousted nearly 25 years ago. Duvalier and his father were known for torturing and killing political opponents and maintaining a brutal secret police force.

Like all too many in the US who still roam around with impunity, this man should be in prison. The remnants of his and his father's misbegotten, literally evil governments, and the corrupt land ownership system there are two major reasons why this poverty-stricken and hugely belabored little country is unable to rebuild and rebound.

6. Total news blackout in Haiti re Baby Doc

Was just watching a Venezuelan TV reporter who says Haitian radio/TV have NOT reported his return yesterday. He said there was calm in the streets of Port-au-Prince this morning. I fear there could be violence once word gets around.

There is supposed to be a news conference by Baby Doc this morning at the heavily guarded luxury hotel where Baby Doc was taken last evening.

The secretary general of the OAS was scheduled to arrive today in the capital with a report critical of the presidential elections held in late November. The TV reporter also said there were rumors that Hillary could arrive too. :shrug:

A new president is scheduled to be inaugurated on Feb. 7. Problem is there is no president to swear in.

Runoff election between top two candidates is completely stalemated and it is not even certain who the candidates are.

It is just boggling that there could be such a ploy under way. I hope not because people are certainly to get hurt. It may be that Baby Doc is only there for a short visit.

10. Nobody loves you when you're down and out

Sure, but Why Sarkozy would let Dulavier out of France on a diplomatic passport is astounding. It is easy to see how Sarkozy might think that one brutal dictator (one in power, one in exile) in the country was finally one too many, and that one of them had to go. But it has to be more than that.

So the question is what strings did Duvalier have to pull? Or, which strings were pulling his?

11. Duvalier cancels news conference

The excuse was that the hotel where he is staying did not have a large enough conference room. Insulza of the OAS and President Preval were meeting this morning at the same hotel.

So now the uncertainity of why Baby Doc returned and why he has not been arrested by the Preval government will continue and grow.
