U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who carved out a national profile through his run for the vice presidency and his often unpredictable streak of bipartisan independence, will not seek re-election, three sources close to the Connecticut senator said Tuesday.

Lieberman has called a news conference for Wednesday in Stamford to disclose his plans.

The news came only hours after independent Susan Bysiewicz, the former veteran secretary of the state who was ruled ineligible last year to run for attorney general, announced her candidacy Tuesday for Lieberman's seat.

And, while I like Bysiewicz, I think her horrible 2010 has ruined her chances as well: she was leading in the polls for governor, then withdrew from that race to run for Attorney General, a lower position. Then, she was ruled ineligible to be AG and looked weak in fighting for the right to run. Then, there was the ballot fiasco in Bridgeport...

Also, after Bysiewicz dropped out of the governor's race, Lamont was leading in the polls for the Democratic nomination. However, he got hammered for ducking debates with Malloy and ended up getting swamped in the primary. So, I think he is down & out politically.

I suspect that the Democratic nominee will be one of the Democratic reps in Congress - Chris Murphy & Joe Courtney have shown interest, and John Larson & Rosa DeLauro would also be strong nominees, but neither has ever run a tough race, while Murphy & Courtney have.
