Deadly Explosion Rocks Tacony: Sources
Source: MSNBC (Philly Station)

A giant explosion rocked the Tacony Section of Philadelphia Tuesday night claiming the life of gas worker, PGW sources said.

The deadly blast happened as crews were working to patch a high-pressure gas main break.

"The street is all blown up," Mayor Michael Nutter said.

The dramatic blast that sent flames and sparks high into the sky was caught on tape by an NBC10 videographer on the scene.

1. Worth their pay...
Yeah, many people do not realize the hazards road workers, electrical workers, gas workers, and just about any worker that deals with infrastructure deals with on a regular basis. Maybe this will give them the support to improve the union contract, assuming they have one.

5. Actually any worker willing to go out there 5 or 6 days a week
to help his fellow man, (or his/her fellow woman) is worth a decent pay, a decent respect for his/her work. Those who risk more than the average office worker, well, we should have a special place for all of them and most of us ordinary workers DO!

Thanks for bringing us the news and your hopes and welcome here!

8. I live in Philly and this was bad
and 2 row houses were completely destroyed. Fortunately they evacuated most of the block before that happened. The worker who was killed was originally reported as "missing" and after the inferno was under control, the *finally* found (what was left of) his body. :(

This was a good-sized gas main and the nearest cross street (Torresdale Ave) is a major thoroughfare with alot of businesses. I expect that the age of the pipes and the weather (freeze/thaw cycles and we just had a snow and ice storm yesterday with more on the way) just took it out.
