2 additional students are charged in L.A. high school shooting
Source: CNN

os Angeles (CNN) -- Two additional Los Angeles students have been charged after a shooting that wounded and hospitalized two other Gardena High School students, including one who was in critical condition Wednesday with a head wound, police said.

Both students -- a boy and a girl -- were arrested late Tuesday and are being held on suspicion of being accessory to a felony, said Lt. Randy Brooks of the Los Angeles school police.

A 17-year-old male student, a senior, was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly brought an automatic handgun in his backpack to a health class and the gun accidentally fired one round when the backpack was put on a desk, authorities said.

Meanwhile, incoming Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy has found that the 2,400-student Gardena High hadn't been performing daily random searches of students with a metal detecting wand, in violation of district policy, said schools spokeswoman Lydia Ramos.

3. Using the archaic definition probably.
Used to distinguish the auto-loaders from revolvers, in handgun-speak "automatic" = "semi-auto" in rifle-speak.

5. i don't know why, but semi-auto handguns are called automatics...
i think it refers to being clip-fed as opposed to a revovler...

4. "the gun accidentally fired..."
Does CNN realize how stupid that sounds? An inanimate object cannot have an 'accident.'

6. It's called diffusion of responsibility. An attempt to deflect blame from the responsible person.
California has a very strict testing program for handguns that are sold here. You can't sell a handgun that will fire when dropped from six feet, even with a chambered round of live ammunition and all safety devices turned off.

I suspect the dumbass kid was playing with the gun, maybe showing it off, and accidentally fired it. Now he's using the "hangdog face" technique to try to get sympathy. But he's the one who decided to illegally bring a loaded weapon to school in the first place.
