Colo. leaders bristle at church edict

By Julia C. Martinez, Denver Post Capitol Bureau

Colorado lawmakers, including Gov. Bill Owens, were nearly united Thursday in shunning the Vatican's directive for lawmakers to actively oppose gay marriages.

"On this issue of same-sex marriage, I have long believed that the formal institution of marriage should be reserved for a man and woman," said Owens, a Catholic. "However, I also agree with John Kennedy that the Vatican should not be attempting to direct politicians on how to vote on any issue."

Members of Colorado's congressional delegation and other state politicians criticized the 12-page set of guidelines from the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

1. In a related announcement,
... the Vatican directed lawmakers to prohibit divorce and prohibit marriages between Catholics and non-Catholics. :eyes:

7. It tried in Italy and in Ireland to do just such things.
And apparently did slow down the advent of such things, but could not stop them.

2. You may want to vote on the poll

3. The Vatican Should Regulate Its Pedophile Priests.....
...and forget about telling the rest of the world what to do. I stopped listening to the Pope when I left the Church in 1977. I'm sure as HELL not gonna start listening to him now.

4. My question is whether
this same level of criticism would have materialized if protestant demoninations had recommended the same thing - and haven't they?

5. The Protestant Denominations.....
...have dealt with how their respective churches deal with gays. The Vatican is advocating oout-and-out discrimination against an entire group of people - gays and lesbians.

That's a big difference. And just as Pat Robertson was openly condemned for calling on his sheeple to pray for Supreme Court retirements, the Vatican should also be openly condemned.

8. Some who appear to want to be Protestant popes, ...
or at least build Protestant papacies, have come out with their edict, and have been roundly condemned for them: Pat Robertson, the Southern Baptist Convention, and a few others come to mind.

6. Good. I'm glad to see their poll at 78% opposed to Vatican interference.
Even those who agree with the Pope on the issue clearly understand that the Vatican has NO RIGHT to tell politicians how to vote, that separation of church and state must be respected, and so on. This Pope is too used to being an autocrat and a Fascist to know when his yammering is creating more opposition among those insulted by his edicts, no matter what they think of the content of his ideas -- thank goodness!

9. Those that who believe in church doctrine
is okay with me. But their freedom ends where my nose begins.

I'm straight and believe in gay rights as long as they don't go around pulling on the right wing weenies.

10. Bingo
...Jon Stewart said it nicely last night, something like:

"I'm against the idea of us being forced into gay marriages. Because that must be what this is about, right? Because if it's not going to be mandatory, why all the fuss?"
