Florida firm guilty of mislabeling haddock
Source: Tampa Tribune

MIAMI (AP) -- A Miami company has pleaded guilty to falsely labeling thousands of pounds of imported haddock as made in the U.S.

A federal judge on Thursday fined MKG Provisions Inc. $20,000 and placed the company on one year's probation.

Prosecutors say MKG last year bought 10,600 pounds of haddock imported from China. The company was relabeling boxes to sell the fish as if it was U.S.-produced.

Court documents show that investigators issued a warning and MKG claimed it was clerical error. But then the practice continued, leading to the criminal charge.

Some time in the slammer might get MKG Provisions Inc.'s attention, Your Honor.

7. exactly
as long as the fine is less than the profit, it is just considered the cost of doing business.

its like this bar that let people smoke even after the indoor ban. they were charged a pitiful fine, but made much more just on the extra business from smokers.

don't want businesses to break the law, make them pay.

3. How much more is out there like this??
I go to Sam's and they sell Grouper for $10. When you look closer you see that it's packaged in Jacksonville (not bad). But I know better. There is no way that you could get 5 fillets for $10 if it's real Grouper. Looking closer I see that it was "wild Caught" in China. You have got to be kidding me. It doesn't even look like grouper fillets. Just poor.

6. Somebody Please Follow Up PAC Contribution to Gov Rick Scott
Would somebody with PAC access through the FEC or elsewhere please find out if this criminal "fishmonger" contributed any PAC $$$ to Gov Rick Scott's gubernatorial campaign? Something stinks in Tallahassee and it smells like Scott & Fish.

8. This is too much govt. regulation
:sarcasm:

I'd bet that is what almost any RW'er would say....."that is why business' leave America"....
It is, to them, wrong for insisting that corporations be honest.
Unless of course, they get sick eating this Chinese crap...oh well, "they" have made sure that all of our oceans are now cesspools of oil and chemicals now anyway.
Our path, economically, environmentally..you name it, is unsustainable.
That is why, after the original "Robber Baron" era, we put rules in place.
Free trade allows for the bypass of all those rules. So, the RW'ers will tell you; "stop with the regulations."
Actually, we need to stop the Free Trade unless we want to be what we are becoming....an environmental cesspool, where the citizens can not even rely on subsistence wages and the wealthy can do whatever they want.....
Why is common sense so scarce?

15. Why would anyone eat fish when it comes from the Gulf?
That place is toxic. Ever seen how sick the clean up people are? I would think imported fish would sell better. Is this our govt. trying to prove nothing happened there? Something odd about it to me.

and not China, either, come to think of it.

9. I worked at a place called B&R Wholesale Tire and Wheel years ago. I quit when they asked us to...
remove the Made in India stickers on all the house brand wheels. They sold them as Made in America. Also sold blem tires as new. I reported them. Nothing.

10. Fish From China!! Is it toxic?
I buy a lot of it--how is it different? It reads "wild caught: product of china"

I am not questioning the violation of course---just want to know if I should stop buying the frozen cod and pollock?

14. I doubt
That it's more toxic than fish caught in the Gulf. Soon, the labels will read caught anywhere except the US

17. If you can't trust US stickers, do you trust China's labels????
After the drywall and the toxic pet food, we became VERY selective.
After BP turned the Gulf into a toxic dead zone, we gave up seafood.

Profit trumps truth on so many levels in this country and apparently the world over.

16. Will it be on Fox "news"
Fox "news", if they report this, will say:

"This event proves we need less regulation on business! If we let them overfish the oceans to extinction, they wouldn't need to buy cheap fish from other sources!"
