Gabrielle Giffords Could Be Released From ICU as Early as This Week

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords may be released from intensive care and transferred to a brain rehabilitation hospital as early as this week, ABC News has learned. The fluid accumulation in her brain that concerned doctors over the weekend has already begun to subside.

Giffords' doctors have expressed confidence that she has passed the most critical period for complications and say that the fluid is not keeping Giffords from receiving three hours of physical therapy a day.

Giffords' trauma surgeon, Dr. John Holcomb, said in recent days that the fluid buildup, which doesn't appear to be infected, was down a little on Saturday and that Giffords was a little more alert and responsive.

Shock Trauma ICU.

To not use techicalese, the liquid is subsiding, and they are removing the tube (shunt) that is removing this.

There are membranes over your brain, before the skull (bone) and while more flexible, they needed to still remove it. This is great news. since it also reduces the risk of infection.

This is actually, this shunt, that is not rare in this case.

US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' condition has been upgraded from serious to good, doctors say.

On Tuesday, Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center said that Mrs Giffords was ready to be moved to TIRR Memorial Hermann - another facility at the Houston hospital.

The transfer is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

10. Does anyone know yet what her chances of full recovery are?

I mean, I know that her prognosis is looking good, but I'm not sure what exactly that means. Does that mean that she'll survive and be able to walk and speak in the future, or does that mean there's a chance that she'll one day be good as new and able to resume an active professional life? Or is that too much to hope for under the circumstances? Does anyone know?
