Egypt president's son, family flee to Britain

CAIRO: Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's son, who is considered as his successor, has fled to Britain along with his family, a US-based Arabic website reported.

The plane with Gamal Mubarak, his wife and daughter on board left for London Tuesday from an airport in western Cairo, the website Akhbar al-Arab said.

The report came as violent unrest broke out in Cairo and other Egyptian cities and hundreds of thousands of people reportedly took to the streets in a Tunisia-inspired day of revolt.

The protesters want Egyptian government to end its 30-year state of emergency and pass a law preventing a president from serving more than two terms, and want the Interior Minister Habib al-Adly to resign.

Suzanne Mubarak, first lady of Egypt, may have just fled to London, arriving at Heathrow airport, according to unconfirmed reports.



Twitter has been ablaze with tweets that Egypt's First Lady was identified by Egyptian airport workers at Heathrow. The tweets did not cite any definitive source.

Earlier, the Italian newspaper Adnkronos said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's son fled to London amid violent protests against the government, citing Arabic website Akhbar al-Arab.

The article also said there are unconfirmed reports that Gamal Mabarak (son of Hosni) and his family boarded a London-bound private jet with 97 pieces of luggage on board.

Hosni Mubarak's regime has been under heavy pressure amid heated protests in Egypt. Some of the protestors have been specifically calling for his resignation.

1.04pm: The Egyptian consulate in Britain was more forthcoming than the UK Home Office (see 12.38pm) on the reports that Gamal Mubarak (son of Hosni) and his family have fled to London amid the protests, my colleague Sam Jones tells me. A spokesman said to him:

We deny it. I assume he is in Cairo, but he's not in London. That's the truth of the matter.

The spokesman, who said the reports had originated on the US-based website, Akhbar Al-Arab, would not comment on whether Gamal Mubarak had any plans to flee Egypt.
