'Birther Bill' back in Arizona; Rep. Judy Burges pitches birth certificate legislation again
Source: NY Daily News

An Arizona legislator has revived her effort to require presidential candidates to show their birth certificate if they want to get on the state's ballot.

State Rep. Judy Burges submitted a new version of the "Birther Bill" on Tuesday, even though a similar bill failed to gain support last year.

This new legislation is extremely specific, seeming to target each of the issues "birthers" have continued to raise regarding President Obama.

Members of the fringe group who believe Obama is not eligible to be commander in chief have argued he was not born in Hawaii, has dual citizenship, or is simply not a "natural born citizen."

2. I know a bill she would NOT like
Namely one that would require every member of the Arizona legislature to get themselves
certified as sane before being allowed within two hundred feet of a microphone.

3. I worry about the "natural born citizen" provision.
Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 01:07 PM by Bette Noir
Wouldn't that mean that people who were delivered by Caesarian section are ineligible? Maybe even those whose mothers delivered with the aid of anesthesia, episiotomies, and/or forceps.

This could be quite a can of worms.

Edited to add, The Founders clearly didn't have c-sections and other modern hospital procedures in mind when they wrote the Constitution.

10. Modern? Per Shakespeare, Macbeth was born by Caesarian section.
And why do they call it "Caesarian?"

Booze is an anesthetic.

Cutting and stitching are not new. Neither are forceps.

"Natural born citizen" is in the Constitution. The term had a generally accepted meaning in 1789 and refers to plae o birth, not to method of birth or procedures used during birth.

6. Hasn't his birth certificate been widely publicized?
I think the birthers' problem is that he's (half) black.

And no birth-certificate-waving event will convince them that he's actually the president.

9. How embarrassing for the United States. These rednecks need to catch up with the rest of the world.
They have such small minds that they think everything is Euro centric.

The US is a VERY young country and they think the world revolves solely around the White Europeans who moved here, however our country has been around long enough that we should be past this hysterical bigotry by now.

They need to go home and look at a map, take some history courses. Civilization with brown-skinned people began long before the US became a country.

11. I have no problem with this. The Constitution requires birth in the U.S. We all should always
have been checking.

Refusing to accept Hawaii's abstract as to Obama is a separate issue--and may just violate another provision of the Constitution, should Arizona try it.

AFAIK, the Constitution does not forbid dual citizenship, but I would need to double check (and am not feeling like it right now).
