U.S. missionary in Mexico fatally shot
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- An American missionary was fatally shot in Mexico on Wednesday, police said.

The preliminary investigation indicated that Nancy Davis, 59, and her husband were traveling on a Mexican highway near the city of San Fernando, Mexico, when they were confronted by gunmen in a black pickup, the Pharr Police Department in Texas said. San Fernando is south of the border city of Reynosa in Tamaulipas state.

"The gunmen were attempting to stop them and the victims accelerated in efforts of getting away from them," the police statement said. "At a certain point the gunmen discharged a weapon at the victim's vehicle and a bullet struck the victim Nancy Shuman Davis on the head."

1. I think the State Dept. needs to put a traveler's warning on some parts of Mexico.

2. Pretty much the whole country.
Acapulco is going to Hell and PV is next.

I would (and have) rather walk thru Cabrini Green at midnight.

4. Um, that's a load of bullshit...
well, at least about putting a travel warning on the whole country. Acapulco and PV do not a whole country make.
Do you really want to paralyze the country even more? Or do you not give a flying fuck?

I spend loads of time in Mexico and have never once had a problem.

8. A friend of mine was killed in a crossfire in Piedras...
Same reason(s) I don't hang out in Oakland.

I, too, have spent a lot of time in MX and have had no problem.

No mas.

If I wish to put myself in any kind of harm's way, I will go drive really fast.

Or maybe I will just step off the curb.

It is all actuarial...

The curb is a mofo.

12. I'm sorry you lost your friend...
but Piedras Negras is a border town and the border violence is not nation wide.
I have traveled all over Mexico as a single female and have yet to have a problem. There are places I simply will not go, so as to not put myself in danger (do NOT read that as blame upon your friend). My friends who live down there full time keep me abreast of things so when I travel, I know where I shouldn't be (example: they wouldn't allow me to go to Patzcuaro for dia de muertos this past November, because it would require me to take the bus alone and this is not safe in that area at the moment).

I just returned from Mexico with my husband, where we backpacked for a week. It was great.

14. The ENTIRE country needs to be covered until such time as these things
are heavily brought under control. this is no small problem.

10. Now Urban Renewal...
has come to Cabrini Green the last family has been moved out and the high rises are being torn down. The property is being developed with homes and townhouses with some set aside for low income families.

I made a promise (and a bet) that I could do it - white guy, walking thru the Green at midnite. I did it for Sammy Taylor.

I think it is a shame to go tearing down that place, gentrifying it and all that shit,

The 'Green was cool, was cold in Winter.

5. There is a travel warning in effect
and the families of US consulate members were pulled out of the country from, I believe, Monterrey. I think they've done the same at other consulate offices.

13. Correct
There are two travel advisories for Mexico that I am aware of as well as periodic ones that come annually around Spring Break and another later in the year (last year and the year before).
