Al Jazeera reporters held in Egypt

Six journalists arrested in Cairo as authorities clampdown on news network amid ongoing mass protests.

Last Modified: 31 Jan 2011 12:55 GMT

Six Al Jazeera English journalists have been arrested in Egypt following a clampdown on the news network.

The move comes a day after it was told to shut down its operations in the country and saw its signal to some parts of the Middle East cut.

It comes as Hosni Mubarak, the president, unveiled a new cabinet in a bid to quell days of protest against him and the government.

A new finance and a new interior minister were appointed Monday, along with a new trade and deputy prime minister.
The defence minister and foreign ministers remained the same.

I guess it's onto plan C, now.

The DC Bureau Chief seems quite confident they'll be able to broadcast from there still. I uploaded the interview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqjx3g0ZuLY

8. Al Jazeera is the equivalent of Arabic FOX. Their reporters in Egypt
had a little revolution of their own. More power to them. I'm glad to hear they were released.

Shake in your fucking boots Western leaders. The lion of Arab unity just woke up and roared.

10. O'Reilly will be ecstatically happy.
The FOX resident nitwit said that El Jazeera was responsible for fomenting the revolts. The FOX so-called reporters are so damn ignorant that they showed a map in which they labeled Iraq as being Egypt. I wonder how he is coming along with that Tide Thingy.

18. US calls for release of Al-Jazeera reporters in Egypt
Edited on Mon Jan-31-11 10:46 AM by Turborama

WASHINGTON — The United States expressed concern Monday about Egypt's shutdown of Al-Jazeera and called for the release of six of the regional news channel's reporters who had been arrested there.

"We are concerned by the shutdown of Al-Jazeera in Egypt and arrest of its correspondents. Egypt must be open and the reporters released," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said in a message on his Twitter account.

Egyptian police on Monday arrested six foreign journalists working for Al-Jazeera English news channel at their Cairo hotel after authorities forbade them covering anti-regime protests, the channel said.

The arrested Al-Jazeera employees are Australian, Portuguese and British, a spokesman for the channel told AFP.

The arrests came after Egypt on Sunday moved to shut down Al-Jazeera's coverage of mass protests against President Hosni Mubarak's regime, but the pan-Arab broadcaster vowed that it would not be silenced.

AWESOME!

Must be because http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=307418&mesg_id=307418">they are relying on AJ English's superb coverage to keep up with what's going on.

I hope this all leads up to cable operators finally providing AJE all across America in the not too distant future.

But you know what those rules are like. ;-)

The important thing is that the US government intervened to help out.

21. I doubt they influenced the decision.
Did you see it on Al Jazz ? They'd been watched to see which windows they were using I guess by comparison with the shots/views they broadcast. Made me laugh the way the girl just changed her clothes and strolled out to miss them.

25. this is why they were arrested
according to one of the journalists arrested and then released, (Dan Nolan http://twitter.com/nolanjazeera) the police specifically mentioned this broadcast, of the bodies in the morgue. Reminds me of Iraq war, when US media were too afraid to show bodies of US soldiers returning. Al Jazeera makes our media look like frightened children.
