(Gov) Brewer defends gun show sales in wake of 'sting'
Source: Arizona Daily Sun

PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer is defending Arizona laws that allow the sale of firearms at gun shows without a background check and forbid cities from imposing such requirements.

"We believe our laws are fair and just in the state of Arizona,'' the governor said Monday.

Her comments come on the heels of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg releasing videos Monday taken by undercover agents at a Phoenix gun show just 15 days after the Tucson shootings. There, Arizona private investigators hired by New York City were able to purchase weapons not only without a background check but, at least twice, after admitting to sellers they probably would not pass.

Brewer said she had not seen the videos. Nor had she seen Bloomberg's comments.

But the governor said the laws are "something that the Legislature and I decide.''

23. Nothing broad brushed at all
Edited on Mon Jan-31-11 11:20 PM by Tempest
Here's what he posted:

Hate the Mexicans, shoot the congresswoman, birthers paradise...

Hate the Mexicans - Maricopa County is under a federal investigation for profiling and civil rights abuses against minorities. Not to mention AZ is where the Minutemen started. And don't try to tell us they're not racist. You'll just make yourself look foolish.

Shoot the Congresswoman - It was AZ's permissive gun laws (demonstrated just this weekend again with the gun show sting) which contributed to the number of dead and wounded.

Birthers Paradise - This says it all:
http://motherjones.com/politics/2011/01/arizona-birther-bill-deny-obama-reelection

So where are the broad brushes?

28. Loughner passed the background check.
Even if we closed the gun-show "loophole" he would have still been able to get a gun.

What other restrictions would you like to see that you think would have prevented the shooting?

3. My opinion is the asshole NY mayor oughta look after his own town
I'm pretty sure Bloomberg has enough on his plate that he doesn't need to spend his city's money investigating and whining about Arizona.

What the hell is he doing messing with the affairs of another state, anyway? A state that is almost as far away from him as any state can get.

The deal in this great country is that the federal government will take care of the big things and each state can conduct it's own affairs according to the wishes of it's own citizens. So New Yorker, go home. Stay home. Let Arizonans live as they see fit.

14. Not to play tag or anything but you may have to look at the text from the article.
Perhaps they misreported and "edited", or somethin'.

While gun dealers must conduct background checks, those laws do not require background checks for the person to person sale of weapons by individuals. But it does prohibit anyone from selling a gun to another person who there is "reasonable cause" to believe is not legally entitled to have one.

In two videos released by Bloomberg, a buyer at the Crossroads of the West gun show on Jan. 23 in Phoenix specifically asked sellers if they were dealers and said, "I probably couldn't pass one."

37. Fair enough.
From what I have seen/heard, the tricky bit seems to be that the sellers said they would agree to the purchase *before* the sting folks said they weren't likely to pass a check, *but* the sale went through anyways....

Devil's in the details, though.

50. Yes, I agree that the sellers violated the law as well
The transactions were illegal, and would not have happened had they not been solicited by Bloomberg's proxies. It's classic entrapment, and as in other kinds of entrapment situations the sellers are indeed guilty of violating the law.

They require a ton of paperwork, and a couple of months to acquire. And since 1986, the registry is closed to civilians, so prices start at ~$3,500 (for crap.)
