1. This is beyond sick -- when such basic human values
as using the toilet take a back seat to profits, it is time to reassess this monster called capitalism and begin to create societies structured around human needs and happiness. Call it socialism, call it ralph -- capitalism/imperialism is out of control and human being have to take control of their own lives and their own world

40. Profits? How does it really increase profits?
Personally, I don't think cashiers doing the pee dance or wearing soiled diapers is very conducive to profit-making. Not only is it unpleasant to be near a grown adult in urine-soaked pants, it's unbearable to be around anyone who is humiliated like that.

How hard can people really work, when they are treated like this? It takes a minute to go to the bathroom and that lost minute is worth the effort.

4. Restrooms breaks a privilege not a right.....
There is a book called Void where Prohibited: This book is about how people had to fight for the "right" to use the restroom on company time.

Go here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0801433908/qid=1059757138/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-2976004-8665418?v=glance&s=books to read some sample pages.

Really scary.

I have worked customer service jobs where we were instructed to use the restrooms only on breaks and lunches. We were instructed to hold it at all other times.

15. Jim Beam went to court over this

Kentucky Bourbon King Faces Government Hearing On Denial Of Bathroom Access
Mothers, Menstruating Women and Older Workers Bear the Brunt of Jim Beams Bathroom Ban

Rally to Support Jim Beam Workers
Noon, August 28
Shepherdsville, Kentucky

Almost half the workers, mostly women, on the Jim Beam bottling line in Clermont, Kentucky have been disciplined for using the bathroom, and some long time workers are even facing firing. According to worker reports, they were told to "train their bladders" to correspond to scheduled break periods and one unscheduled bathroom time; or face discipline, including dismissal.

http://www.ufcw.org/press_room/press_releases_2002/jimbeambathhearing.cfm

I paid attention to it at the time- maybe through Michael Moore's site- and the company backed off.

7. This merits rebellion.
Edited on Fri Aug-01-03 04:43 PM by NYC
The problem is that when jobs are scarce, they'll fire the employees who stand up for their rights, and hire people who are more submissive.

Alexander Hamilton said: A power over a man's subsistence amounts to a power over his will.

Another excerpt:

Female cashiers in western Mendoza province must wear adult nappies in case "cold, nerves, pressure or stress" provoke incontinence, union official Jorge Cordova told local news agency Diarios y Noticias.

8. No they wont.
The Murkan Sheeple have been conditioned to believe that all union workers are over-paid, under-worked, fat, lazy crybaby slobs.
Just this AM I over heard a truck driver griping to another driver over how he couldn't get his day started as early as he liked because "The Union" made the guy who used to load him stop coming in 2 hours before the official start of work.

Never mind all that "Union Won" crap he enjoys, like a big enough paycheck to feel like a "real" ReTHUGlican, paid vacations, and paid medical leave when his dumping trailer broke and flipped his truck over.....No, all that he enjoys because his boss and the company he works for are "fair".

We're gonna need another John L. Lewis, another Walter Reuther, another Caesar Chavez, and people are gonna have to die before the sheep wake up and realized they've been fucked. And even that won't work, because the average minimum wage worker won't be willing to give up their cable that gobbles a big chunk of their pay and poisons their minds. "No thanks, I like my job, it pays my bills. Why, I've almost saved up enough to buy a '79 Tempo at Smilin' Jack's used cars, so I can quit riding the bus. I can't do anything that might lose me my job!"

Reagan started it with the Air Controllers, and it just keeps coming.

36. Or how Harvey Bennett used to have Reuther put in the hospital...
Bennett was Ford's "Chief Goon", head of the "Sociologoical department" that used to intrude on Ford workers when they were at home to make sure they were spending that fabulous dollar-a-day on "Wholesome" pursuits, also to make sure that the single women who worked for Ford were staying in proper rooming houses, and not keeping house alone...(horrors)

When the UAW tried to organize Ford, Bennett changed over to C-in-C of Ford's private army of thugs who would come OFF the company property and beat Union organizers and pickets sensless on the public street, then claim the Union men were "Tresspassing".Reuther was put in the hospital more than once from the Ford-sanctioned beatings he got. If any Ford worker was found to have joined the UAW, he was immediately fired and "escorted" off the property by Bennett's Goons. Some of them were never seen alive again.

We never hear about the blood that was shed or the men who died to get us things like an 8-hour day and paid sick leave. But we heard PLENTY about how Ford started the "Dollar a Day" wage. What bullshit! It wasn't because he "loved" his workers and wanted to treat them fair, he just wanted to keep the UAW out.

Ford found this so offensive, his goons would check the cupboards of the workers' homes to make sure their wives were not using canned green beans.

38. Those days are coming again...
How many stories have we heard about companies not only banning smoking on company premises, but checking their employees for tobacco use OFF the clock and job site, too? Nicotine in your blood, you no workee here.

Of course, checking for nicotine is DoublePlusGood, because tobacco is bad. Let that same employer make you piss in a cup to check for THC or opiates and then it's not so right, is it?

How about company "Health Screens" to make sure you're not eating too much fat or drinking too much caffeine? Company "Health Department Representatives" spying on you to make sure you don't climb on the roof of your house to clean the gutters (safer to hire a "professional") or ride a bike bareheaded, or buy junk food at the grocery? All in the name of "Protecting their investment in you"

We're heading that way again...

And the Sheeple will swallow it, because The Corporation will tell you it's for cheaper insurance premiums....

49. Pal of mine has horror stories of working for MCI
She retired a couple years ago. Said they could only go to bathroom during scheduled breaks; ladies room always full of women WEEPING during their breaks cuz the place was so terrible. They had several bomb threats a month and no evauation plan (til my pal contacted OSHA and raised a fuss); most of bomb threats were not even mentioned to employees. There was a fire between the structural ceiling and the sub ceiling, fireman was standing on my friend's work station desk with a wet hose running against her and her computer yet she was not allowed to leave her station and was told she should ask the fireman to position his legs so she could see her computer moniter and continue to work! Said she was getting shocked and finally just got up and walked to the supervisor like she was daring her to do anything about it.

Life for the Amerikkan worker has been going down the tubes for some time and since no one has raised a fuss, the Massers are getting bolder all the time. Since the only way they ever learned to increas profits was to cut costs, there is no end of abuses and stupidity in sight.

51. BiggJawn, my dad fought alongside Walter Reuther
and was badly beaten, in the "battle of the overpass" by William Bennett's "service department", while the Dearborn (Michigan) police department stood by watching. It wasn't just the union organizers who were beaten. Women, children, clergy, journalists and photographers were roughed up, some badly. This was the late 1930's (I think 1937, but could be wrong).

Dad said that William Bennett was probably the second most powerful man at Ford. Dad had been followed home and elsewhere, by these goons on many occassions - this was even before he joined the UAW. The intimidation factor Ford and Bennett placed on my dad had the opposite effect. Dad began organizing himself, and nearly died at the "battle of the overpass". They beat him to unconsiousness and threw his body down some stairs. Walter Reuther paid for my dad's hospital bills.

My dad only had good words for Walter. He said Walter believed that the automobile companies held an obligation beyond their stockholders to provide safe working conditions and a decent wage for their employees and for society as well.

I didn't learn of my dad's activities until I was grown, and complaining about having to pay union dues. Dad told me (as someone already mentioned in this thread) that the only thing worse than unions are the conditions that brought them to us. When we grow up 'soft' we need our elders to remind us of the why's and whatfors. Our educational system won't teach our children our history, it's up to us. (Re-writing history or re-dating history is a daily occurance in today's White House).

Walter Reuther and his wife, Mary, were killed, I think in 1970, in a plane crash in Michigan. My dad never believed it was an accident.

26. Yes, it's outrageous, and, yes, there are plenty of workers in the US

who aren't allowed to go to the bathroom except on scheduled breaks and lunch hour (which is usually not an hour.) It's not just checkout clerks and factory workers, it's teachers, too. And teachers are often forced to work all during their lunch break, supervising students in the lunch room. Most elementary school teachers must do this and many high school teachers have to do it as well. It's all the fault of those damned cheap-labor conservatives who care nothing about workers as people. It's all about paying workers the lowest possible wage. Don't like it? Quit and they'll hire someone else. These guys love high unemployment because of the desperate people it creates.

When I got a job teaching Enlish with only a BA in English, a professor in and Education course I was taking was flabbergasted. "English teachers are a dime a dozen."

After 3 years of deplorable working conditions, I quit. Now, Georiga's Hope scholarship will pay for people who are in graduate school if they are getting an education degree in a "dire needs" area.

Guess what? English is now on that list, along with the old standards - math, science, foreign language.

32. "Attends" or "Depends" and plane trips
Edited on Fri Aug-01-03 10:07 PM by Valerie5555
Would pity the poor airline passengers and even crew members if they had to wear either "Attends" or "Depends" on plane trips if the air marshals were quick to mistake them for highjackers or something just because they absolutely HAD to use the bathroom because they were thinking "what was I thinking when I had that LARGE cup of coffee before we took off," and it was SHORTLY befor the PLANE was to LAND.

Just a crazy thought concerning air marshalls but I could relate to the matter of having to go to the washroom on a plane that was in the process of landing and by the way I luckily made it to both the airport washroom and then the connecting flight I had to make.

At least this is on topic concerning the "Attends" or "Depends" and concerning the matter of air marshals, I wonder if some airline pilots are apt to think "Air marshals??????????????? We don't need no steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg air marshalls" for they were more apt to be inclined to have the passengers and crew on their flights unite to "jump" any would be highjackers. On edit what I meant by "jumping" the highjackers is telling them "HIGHJACK THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

35. 'Depends' or 'Attends' were worn by a relative of mine on a flight.
Actually, it was a step parent. It was after my parent died...and, this was for the surviving spouse. (Sorry, I can't be more specific-but, I'm paranoid of repuke lurkers-and, this person and family is VERY repuke.) Anyway, this step parent was put on a flight in diapers in First Class! The entire travel itineray was over 12 hours! So, it was diapers to the rescue-just in case. This was a freeper "relative" and his / her relative who came up with this "solution" to a long flight. I was flabergasted! But, I was only the "step child"-so, I and my siblings had absolutely no input whatsoever.
