Malta turns away Libyan rescue plane – report

Confusion exists about attempts by a Libyan Arab Airlines to land in Malta, with reports stating that it has been refused permission to land.
But a Foreign Ministry spokesman said that he was not aware of such a situation.

Reports stated that the aircraft was circling around 40 miles to Malta’s south, and that negotiations to land are underway now that it is getting short on fuel.

The aircraft is reported to have 14 people on board.

14 people on a commercial aircraft isn't a traditional evacuation flight; other reports have suggested Gaddafi's daughter is trying to escape on the plane.

Reports were maintaining that Muammar Gaddafi’s only daughter, Aisha, was set to land in Malta on a Libyan Arab Airlines flight.
The aircraft in question had made contact with Maltese Air Traffic Control and requested clearance through local airspace. Permission was however refused, and the aircraft is said to be returning to Libya.

Ms Gaddafi, a lawyer, had represented Saddam Hussein at the trial which led to his execution.

According to US diplomatic cables revealed by wikileaks, Gaddafi’s 8 children had all carved out spheres of influence within Libya, treating it as a personal fiefdom.
