WASHINGTON — Presidential adviser Karl Rove (search) is late in paying his Washington, D.C., property taxes, Democratic sources told Fox News on Friday.

10. Actually, the Queen recently started paying property and income
taxes. I believe this was an early Blair victory back in 97. Unfortunately, it's a little too late to make a big difference, but it's better than nothing, and hopefully a trend of policies that will bring an end to the monarchy within the next 15 years.

6. Bet the idiots over
at the "other site" won't put this article on their board. Does anyone have an account there to post it to see what they're going to say about this because they had a field day about Edwards.

A day late and a dollar short, Charlie. Old story with no news value. I know, let's review the property tax payment status of everyone in Congress and their aides. Let's start with the California delegation.

11. Just a guess from a DC resident, but Rove is probably ok on this.

I don't know if Karl Rove is habitually sloppy about personal finances (although, given the pile of money he's made, I doubt that he is), but folks really should read the linked article before jumping to the attack.

Specifically, the article says Rove's mortgage company failed to make the appropriate tax payment. This rings true to me. Most of us bundle our property taxes and insurance into our mortgage payments and forget about it. (That's called PITI for the kids around here who don't pay a mortgage.) My mortgage company tracks changes in taxes and insurance and adjusts my escrow account annually, so my monthly payment changes every year. Only the loan principal and interest are fixed; the rest changes.

I assume Rove has a conventional mortgage and, like the rest of us, assumes his mortage company is doing its job. How, then, do such errors occur? Well, sometimes people just make mistakes. But as a DC resident, I would note one more factor. Residential real estate has been booming in DC as gentrification accelerates. Property values have been soaring. The city is cashing in with massive reassessments and property tax increases. As an aside, this is stupidly self-destructive because, if the process continues for a decade or two, DC will tax the remaining middle class out of town. But stupidly self-destructive has been the name of the game in DC local government for a long, long time, and that's another story.

I don't know where Rove lives, but I suppose he's in one of our more upscale neighborhoods. That would mean he's probably been hit with a very substantial property tax increase. (I live in a very modest house on Capitol Hill, the assessment on which was tripled last year. This begins to hurt. DC is small. How many thousands of dollars a year is it worth to avoid crossing the bridge?) My guess is that Rove's mortgage company, for whatever reason, failed to make the change and has continued to pay at the old rate. This would not be Rove's fault.
