Former president George W. Bush calls bin Laden death 'momentous achievement'
Source: Los Angeles Times

Former President George W. Bush, who was in office at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks and famously said he wanted Osama bin Laden dead or alive, said on Sunday the death of the al Qaeda leader was a "momentous achievement."

"The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done," Bush said in a statement.

4. I'll bet Cheney goes dove hunting by sunup tomorrow
I can guarantee you that he will do the following:

1). Make a statement along the lines of "this proves that Bush Administration policies were right," and...

2). Call upon President Obama to publicly "thank" them by name.

Note that President Obama thanked the Military and their efforts, as well he should, but he did not personally thank Bush and Cheney as the "architects," and while that probably bothers both of them, it's gonna bother Evil Dick a lot more.

:-)

However; it does feel better to know that a Dem in office only took a few years to accomplish what A Repub. "tried" to do in 8, but failed.

26. Why would the neoCONs have wanted to whack one of their own?
Someone who's family had contributed to both w and his dad's political treasure chests.

Bush never wanted to bring bad Bin in dead, or most definitely not alive, IMO.

Bush could have turned Geraldo loose on Obama in 2001 at "Tora Bora" but he didn't.

Proof that Bush, Geraldo and Bin Laden were probably in cahoots, IMO.

23. Bush wasted time, money, material and manpower in Iraq.
Saddam Hussein was a horrible person, but Bush should not have prioritized pursuing him.

Obama has been focusing on Osama Bin Laden, and that was the right thing to do.

I really though that if the US hadn't caught him within the first years following 9/11 and if Obama did not catch him within a year after the surge in Afghanistan that Osama Bin Laden had to be dead. I think the world will be dangerous in the immediate future especially in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but ultimately it is good that Osama Bin Laden, who was a symbol for Al Qaeda wannabes is no longer a threat.

19. Yep, and that little tidbit has been absent from all
the reporting tonight. The whores on CBS actually proclaimed that the effort to find Bin Ladin began under Bush. Nothing like giving the chimp credit for something he publicly took little interest in.

That was a very gracious statement.

Today is a day for coming together, rather than partisan political bickering, and this statement is helpful in that regard so I say thank you President Bush for those gracious words.

21. Bush on bin Laden, March 2002: "I am truly not that concerned about him"
Edited on Mon May-02-11 01:47 AM by alp227
http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2002/03/20020313-8.html

Q But don't you believe that the threat that bin Laden posed won't truly be eliminated until he is found either dead or alive?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, as I say, we haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is. I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run. I was concerned about him, when he had taken over a country. I was concerned about the fact that he was basically running Afghanistan and calling the shots for the Taliban.

But once we set out the policy and started executing the plan, he became -- we shoved him out more and more on the margins. He has no place to train his al Qaeda killers anymore. And if we -- excuse me for a minute -- and if we find a training camp, we'll take care of it. Either we will or our friends will. That's one of the things -- part of the new phase that's becoming apparent to the American people is that we're working closely with other governments to deny sanctuary, or training, or a place to hide, or a place to raise money.

And we've got more work to do. See, that's the thing the American people have got to understand, that we've only been at this six months. This is going to be a long struggle. I keep saying that; I don't know whether you all believe me or not. But time will show you that it's going to take a long time to achieve this objective. And I can assure you, I am not going to blink. And I'm not going to get tired. Because I know what is at stake. And history has called us to action, and I am going to seize this moment for the good of the world, for peace in the world and for freedom.

22. The LA Times should've written-
"Former President George W. Bush, who's incompetence was instrumental in helping Osama bin Laden's plans to attack the US on Sept. 11, 2001 succeed and famously said he wanted Osama bin Laden dead or alive, but then just as famously gave up the hunt for the al Qaeda leader..."

24. Isn't that the same G W Bush who:
Was photographed sharing Thanksgiving dinner with bin Laden's family? And who is also business partners with that same family? Isn't that also the same G W Bush who saw to it that bin Laden's family had a specially chartered jet to fly them out of the USA on Sept 11th, while all of the rest of us waited for days in the air terminals trying to get to our destinations?? Did anyone notice today which side of his mouth he was speaking out of? Who does that lying bastard think he is kidding? He never wanted bin Laden dead, and he never even tried to hunt him down. America, you have been lied to by one additional evil man. The only difference is that this one is still alive.

38. Neither is retaliating or taking vengeance. Not saying Osama should not
have been killed (or should have been). Just saying repaying murder with murder is probably not the best definition or example of "justice."

Remember, Osama said he resolved to retaliate when he saw the blood of children running when Bush 41 attacked Beirut (or proteted Beirut or whatever the official rationale was).

In another sense, no justice is available for some crimes. Making Osama feel the fear and flames all 911 victims felt and all the loss the survivors felt may have been justice, but we have no way of doing anything like that.

Bottom line, at some point, Osama died and I'm not grieving.

37. but he never actually was.
If you notice, we often don't even try people we have custody. I maintain that assassination/murder is wrong, no matter who the victim may be. To claim that the killing/murder of a non-military target is a legitimate political act seems to justify terrorism.
