(WASHINGTON) -- In accordance with Islamic law, the body of Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea, a U.S. official told ABC News.

Officials said the last thing they wanted is for bin Laden's burial place to become a terrorist shrine. In order to avoid that, his body was laid to rest at sea, leaving no definitive location for the final resting place of his body.

15. Actually, Islamic Law and Jewish Law regarding burial are quite similar.

They require that a body be buried within 24 hours of death.

Since Bin Laden was killed almost a day ago, "burying" him by now is usual custom.

I'm sure they have actual video of his body with a bullet through the head, before they wrapped him and dumped him at sea.

Also, they already have DNA evidence, having collected samples from one or more of his brothers.

Then they would just have to compare the Y chromosome, since all male siblings of a family share the same Y chromosome.

His family is known of and respected in many parts of the world. He was once a well known leader (for his people) in the battle against the Soviets. I can't be sure what his real motivation was, he was once someone who was a US ally that we supported. When the Soviets finally left, there was much cheering, many pats on the back. Then a bunch of suits in Washington came to the conclusion that no one really gave a damn about rebuilding Afghanistan, or playing a real significant part in helping them to create a safer, more prosperous Nation.

That in itself didn't make OBL a madman or justify his actions - as a general rule, madmen need no justification to commit terrible crimes. Yet it is in part how he gained so much support from thousands of people.

To an extent, our actions during the Soviet era were good and well intentioned, but we seriously screwed up the end game. Had we done differently and given our support to the people of Afghanistan in rebuilding their Nation, OBL might never have become the threat that he did. He certainly would not have had the support he has, not even from extremists. Could we have prevented the rise of the Taliban and the growth of organizations like Al Qaeda? Perhaps, perhaps not. Hindsight...

Fears about his burial place turning into a shrine for Islamists were probably unfounded, since the Wahhabi/Salafi tradition rejects such things. Even Saudi kings are buried in unmarked graves.

1 - the U.S. says they did not tell the Pakistan government until after the assault. Pakistan says they helped plan it.
2 - the U.S. says they have done DNA tests to confirm the death as well as facial recognition (he was shot in the head)
3 - was there any outside verifiers to confirm the DNA or facial confirmation prior to getting rid of the body? (or just take our word for it)
4 - to be technical, the U.S. dropped military personal into the city of a sovereign country and assassinated people without the "approval" from said government. (against international law)

They needed to bury him somewhere on land so that the body could be exhumed and re-tested for DNA if enough doubts arose. By disposing of the body in a completely inaccessible place, the only "proof" of his death we can hold up to the rest of the world are photos (which can easily be faked) and non-verifiable DNA reports from U.S. military/intelligence medical staff (even more so). I can easily see people claiming down the line that the U.S. got a double of ObL, fabricated the "evidence" of his death, and disposed of the body where it could not be found so that the supposed cover-up could never be discovered.
