Hamas condemns killing of "holy warrior" bin Laden

GAZA (Reuters) - The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Monday condemned the killing by U.S. forces of Osama bin Laden and mourned him as an "Arab holy warrior."

"We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood," Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas administration in the Gaza Strip, told reporters.

Though he noted doctrinal differences between bin Laden's al Qaeda and Hamas, Haniyeh said: "We condemn the assassination and the killing of an Arab holy warrior. We ask God to offer him mercy with the true believers and the martyrs."

Not too far-out a scenario: George Bush killed a bunch of Muslim/Arabs, a Muslim/Arab assassination squad got him, a political/religious leader from the extreme of the prevailing spectrum who does represent the opinions of a large segment of his society praises Bush and calls for a holy war against Muslims/Arabs ...

You're still Americans, now. Except you've had your country occupied by, oh, Canadians for a few decades. Or Mexicans. And Pat Robertson has been fighting the occupiers and delivering social welfare programs your people desperately need. As well as controlling your school curricula.

I wouldn't say what Hamas has said if I were one of you in that situation. But then I wouldn't say anything Pat Robertson and his ilk say either. Except that Soviet Canuckistan thing. Best line of the decade.
