Sony suffers second major user data theft
Source: Reuters

Sony disclosed on Monday hackers had stolen the names, addresses and passwords of nearly 25 million more users than previously known less than a day after the Japanese company apologized for one of the worst break-ins in Internet history.

Sony's latest revelation comes after Sony No. 2 Kazuo Hirai announced measures had been put in place to avert another Playstation-type cyberattack, hoping to repair its tarnished image and reassure customers who might be pondering a shift to Microsoft's Xbox.

The Japanese electronics company said it discovered the break-in of its Sony Online Entertainment PC games network also led to the theft of 10,700 direct debit records from customers in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain and 12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers.

3. This could've been avoided...Sony's Fault
"The lawsuit claims Sony had inadequate firewalls, inadequate use of encryption and unauthorized storage of data, violating PCI standards and California law governing security of customer information."

that doesn't change the fact that these people are criminals for what they are doing.

6. Stealing data and Leaving Personal data
Edited on Mon May-02-11 11:54 PM by ChromeFoundry
UNPROTECTED! ...are both criminal acts.

Why do you think that Sony publicly apologized for "leaving the keys in the car with the windows rolled down"? They know they screwed up!

How many people need to explain this to you - over and over, again - before you understand that the "overwhelming majority" of the blame is on Sony, not the hackers (not letting the hackers off the hook here, what they did was wrong too)? I say, sharp as a bowling ball.

10. At least one more
It was Sony's fault but it never would have happened if the hackers didn't HACK! People who put 100% of the blame one Sony, like so many here seem to, at in the same boat as the people who support terrorists. If it was unacceptable in society to hack, there would be very few hackers, same with terrorists, if it was unacceptable to be a terrorist there would be few terrorists.

12. Wow, seriously>?
Last time I checked... murder was still illegal and unacceptable in society. Those stats are on the rise across the nation.

So what is your point that I seem to be missing? Are you saying there are a lot of terrorists because it is still acceptable to support terror?
if it was unacceptable to be a terrorist there would be few terrorists.

Do you even understand what "hacking" is? Do you know how encryption works? Do you think that all hacking is bad?

Understanding how a Eukaryotic cell functions, required a lot of "hacking". With the gains in knowledge we have developed an understanding of the processes to design medications to save lives. Are you saying that trying to understand any work that you did not conceive on your own should be deemed illegal??? Science is all about distribution and sharing of knowledge. Forming building blocks of knowledge is what has caused human beings to progress throughout history.

or should be just say, "fuck progress... Drale can't play Modern Warfare today, and he's worried about his trophies being lost. Quick, everyone put your heads back in the sand!"

"Hacking" is not evil. What one decides to do with the knowledge they acquire is what can define evil. Sony was evil when they installed rootkits on Windows machines when people put their CDs in the CDROM. They exposed hundreds of thousands of PCs to anyone that wanted to gain illegal entry to any system infected with their rootkit. This type of activity goes unpunished if a corporation infects machines... but if an individual does the same act... they go to prison.

Oh, and if Mark Russinovich was not an excellent "hacker" (now, currently working at Microsoft), Sony's deeds would have gone unnoticed.

5. Sony shoulda secured their shit better yo
yeah hackers are an annoyance just like viruses but seriously - it aint the end of the fucking world. i'd rather a world with hackers than a world where sony and only big corporations had total control of the internet.

Fact is Sony had a 70 million subscriber network and they got caught slacking on the security front and now they will pay. They didn't hire the hard core security team until AFTER this happened. Bet next time they secure their shit right to begin with. Hope you learned your lesson Sony.

2. Just got done filing fraud alerts with the credit bureaus.
I got rid of my Xbox because of the ring of death bullshit, and was happy with my PS3 until this. Once the network is back online I sure as hell won't be buying anything else with my credit card on there!
