Libya rebels seek billions from West
Source: Reuters Africa Tue May 3, 2011 11:10am GMT

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi attacked rebel areas of Libya's Western Mountains while insurgents moved to secure billions of dollars to feed and supply their territories and drive their military campaign.

Ali Tarhouni, head of the rebel national council's finance committee, said on Tuesday he expected France, Italy and the United States to extend credit secured against frozen Libyan state assets. Money should arrive in a week to ten days.

"I need about $2-3 billion and we are hoping to get most or all of this," Tarhouni told reporters in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

2. First I want
to know who these rebels are. We can't just hand over the money to people with no assurances that radicals aren't going to get their hands on it.

3. Why? We give billions to Pakistan without knowing ...
... if the money is going to radicals.

This is just one more war, one more money drain.

Besides, the rebel leaders need to start building their retirement funds.

Pakistan is the major reason I want to know where the money is going.

9. Agreed, something like that or
even worse a new Taliban like government taking power would be horrible for the people in that region.

10. But it's to be borrowed against frozen Libyan assets, so it's sort of their money, right?
We give them money and we keep the assets I guess.

16. Only if the rebels win
If the rebels lose, Qaddafi's assets probably unfreeze, and any rebel loans are a separate matter.

It's not the rebels' assets to borrow against.

25. It's the Libyans assets and the rebels represent 20%+ of the entire population of Libya.
That's in liberated areas.

Given that the slush fund is in the hundreds of billions, it cannot hurt to loan them this pitiful amount.

26. Correct. Gaddafi was a *heavy* investor in the west. He was no "anti-imperialist."
He saw where the money was and put it there after normalizing relations.

Your link goes to "Libyan refugees flee fighting by land and sea"

The article I think you wanted was Libyan rebels seek $2-3 bln in foreign loans

to include the updated link. I've seen article titles do a complete 180 as to meaning. It's the fine line you walk to have latest. LOL

21. How weird is that? I made point of checking the time on your post
before I replied; I saw that you had 10-15 minutes in the 1 hour edit window. Then after my 2nd reply to you, your post time is almost 3 hours earlier than I had seen it. Too strange. I guess my PC took a while to sync up with DU.

Weird that.

28. Violent overthrow is illegal in all states.
The question is whether or not you can form alliances after you get the thing started. :hi:

The rebels managed to do it, even though they know that the imperialists just want better oil deals (they've said as much, they don't care, their revolution didn't go like Tunisia or Egypt). :)

22. This is fucking pointless
Edited on Tue May-03-11 12:27 PM by JayceR
I don't mean to sound like a RW douchebag, but Obama stated almost no clear purpose or objective for our involvement in this civil war. We're supposedly helping the unorganized "Rebels"... who may or may not be the same Islamic Fundamentalists spread throughout every other theocracy across the Middle East. I gather that this is a special interest thing for the U.N. and Europe's oil companies. Gaddafi is a jerk, but he has compromised with us at times (For example, a few years ago, he held back progress on his Nuclear Program at our request). Perhaps there's some other purpose of this war that they're not telling us about... but I don't want to sound like a conspiracy nut.

29. What a great scam. Let's say there are two thousand
of them to safely cover both political leadership and fighters in the field. Two billion dollars split evenly will be like $1 million a head.
Not bad for the kind of job they do. I bet Qaddafi would give them twice the amount to just go away. Here is your solution to the
problem.

31. Your money will arrive a week to ten days from now on Blackhawk helicopters.
Each helicopter will carry one pallet, each containing 500 million US dollars in unmarked bills. There will be a total of six pallets made available to you. Please disperse the money as you see fit.
