Pakistan criticizes raid on bin Laden
Source: Associated Press

Country says it is 'deeply concerned'

ISLAMABAD (AP) - Pakistan criticized the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden as an "unauthorized unilateral action" and warned Washington on Tuesday not to launch similar operations in the future.

The comments laid bare the tensions triggered by Monday's attack, which came at time when U.S.-Pakistani ties were already near rock bottom.

<snip>

In a statement, the government said "this event of unauthorized unilateral action cannot be taken as a rule."

"The Government of Pakistan further affirms that such an event shall not serve as a future precedent for any state, including the U.S.," adding such actions can sometimes constitute a "threat to international peace and security."

1. I'm pretty sure the reason that they where not informed
was because someone in their government would have tipped Osama off and he would have disappeared again.

6. Exactly correct
I just posted an article where Leon Panetta states that very fact. Not that any person with half a brain couldn't figure it out on their own. :D

12. In all fairness, and regardless of the circumstances, they HAD to say that.
The government (and individual politicians) can't put enough distance between themselves and this incident. They've got AQ and Taliban walking the streets outside their homes and offices.

9. That's funny..they "warned washington" not to do it again...
..or what? You'll 'warn' us again??

We flew into your country and you had NO IDEA WE WERE THERE...

The reason they are so worried is that this lets India know that the Pakistani military is for shit..

It also confirms one of two things: they either KNEW OBL was there and didn't do anything about it for fear of pissing off the radical portion of the pakistani miitary/ISI, or they didn't know and a foreign country was able to fly in military units undetected and conduct operations without so much as a blink from the their own defense forces...tails you lose, heads you lose...

As Rachel Maddow pointed out last night the top 4-5 of the AQ leadership, including the boss, were found living in comfort in major pakistani cities over the last 8 years or so...The question really ought to be asked...whose side are they REALLY on?

10. Let's stop giving them money then.
They don't help us find anyone; we can't trust them if we need to attack inside Pakistan; and now they're saying we can't attack inside Pakistan unless we trust them. So, what are we giving them money for anymore?

Sounds like time to treat them as hostile or, at best, leaning anti- American.

11. I was just thinking about this myself. It blows me away
that instead of being truly humbled and apologetic that they were so damned stupid that they didn't know OBL was in their country under the nose of the military academy, they are pounding their chests and rebuking us. Not one note of humility from them. Threats, demands, yes. Disgust at their incompetence, no. They were supposed to be helping us find OBL and other terrorists who were hiding in their country. They were supposed to be our friends. We were buying their cooperation. And they were sitting there with their heads up their asses. And now they are raising hell.

Pakistan, I am waiting for your apology!

22. Of course they knew. And at some point, somebody made a call.
This bluster is CYA. It's been reported that they cut a deal with McChrystal years ago that he could do hot pursuit into their territory if they could deny all knowledge.

We probably couldn't have caught bin Laden without them.

23. yea. nice to see someone else realizes this as well.
the guys from the south of Pakistan - who are the Bhutto crowd; as well as the majority of Pakistan's population - are probably worse scared shitless of the lunatic taliban-type fanatics in the northwest, than the bunch of US chickenhawks who squawk around this country on cue from their rich overlords.

like you, i would bet - they provided the background data, the non-interference clauses & maybe some of the logistics, for this operation; and are now trying hard to cover their tracks with the locals, with all this bluster; and being helped along by Panetta & the CIA propaganda guys in their endeavors, of course - rightly so.

15. They should be more...
...concerned about how deeply jihadist fanatics appear to have infiltrated their intel and military organisations. They have had murderous sectarian terrorism, hosted the world most wanted terrorist almost in the gatehouse to their military accademy and have had a bloody outright civil war almost in the suburbs if Islamabad but all that seems to be of minor concern.

took care of one or more of the war criminals we are harboring, without us, U.S. knowing ahead of time?

and allowing that criminal to carry out terrorist attacks on that country, I would not blame that country for coming in and killing him.

CIA agents gun them down in the street with impunity.

Why don't y'all look through Paki eyes for once? Wouldn't you be pissed off at a foreign country blowing your people to hell?

20. The ISI has been harboring bin Laden well before we started launching drone attacks in their country
and the country has been sponsoring terrorism well before we went in there.

So, I have no guilt and qualms about our actions. I'm glad Obama had the balls to say fuck sovereignty and launch this covert action.

25. Change?
> I'm glad Obama had the balls to say fuck sovereignty

What would be nice is a US president who DOESN'T say "Fuck sovereignty"
whenever there is a suitable political or financial reason to bomb, invade
or otherwise fuck up someone else's country ...

Back in 2008 I thought you'd found one.

27. Although I'm Not
celebrating this incident, to me it seems like a fair hit. And we COULD have bombed the crap out of the area killing many civilians but we didn't. Thank god. This thing seemingly went as well as it could have with all due consideration given to those who were not involved but happened to live in the area.

28. I agree with the manner that it appears to have been carried out ...
... i.e., precision hit rather than just the usual "collateral damage = insurgent"
slaughter - and I bet that, as you say, the people who happened to live in the area
were also glad of the change in tactics.

My gripe was with the "glad Obama had the balls to say fuck sovereignty" comment.
