Bush Says Policies Are Affecting Economy

President Bush says the economy's improved growth rate in the second quarter is a sign that his policies are starting to have a positive effect - though he acknowledges unemployment is still a problem.

"The best way to promote growth and job creation is to leave more money in the pockets of households and small businesses, instead of taxing it away," Bush said in his radio address for Saturday. "So we lowered income tax rates, cut taxes on dividends and capital gains, reduced the marriage penalty and increased the child tax credit."

The nation's gross domestic product, the broadest barometer of the economy's shape, expanded at an annual rate of 2.4 percent in the April to June quarter, government economists said this week. That was the fastest growth rate since last summer.

The president warned, however, that the jobless rate shows there is more work to do on the economy.

The economy might have fully recovered by now were it not for the Bush "prescription" of war and soft-on-corporate-crime negligence. Bush is just taking advantage of the poor economy to pay off his wealthy supporters. When the economy recovers on its own accord, Bush compounds the injury by taking credit. We need to start talking about this.

but out of the 2.4% increase, isn't it true that 1.2% (half) of it is due to military spending on the Iraqi war? So if we didn't go to war, then wouldn't the increase actually be 1.2% and less than what the analysts predicted which was 1.5%?

When Bush was selected*, the government had a $280 billion surplus. Since then, we've had a $450 billion deficit. That means that Bush has spent over $730 billion in two and a half years. Add to this that Greenspan has cut interest rates to the bone, and all that we get is a 2.4% growth in the GDP.

Without these massive federal government infusion of cash into the economy, we'd be in a depression.
