Lawyer says hotel maid who accused IMF chief had no idea who he was and is telling the truth
Source: AP/StarTribune

LONDON - The lawyer for a hotel maid who accused IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual abuse says she feels "alone in the world" and is telling the truth.

Lawyer Jeffrey Shapiro says the maid is an immigrant from the West African nation of Guinea with a 15-year-old daughter. He says she had no idea who Strauss-Kahn was until a day or two after she was attacked on Saturday.

Shapiro says his client's story of being attacked by Strauss-Kahn in his Sofitel hotel suite is "consistent" because she is telling the truth.

2. Isn't it a sad commentary that the victim has to have legal representation...
nowadays. Why do prosecutors not do more to protect them from such public attacks?

7. She has a lawyer because
a) she may get paid a hefty sum to recant her story and someone has to negotiate it or
b) there certainly will be a civil suit against the IMF where she will need representation.

8. Aren't you just the cynical judgmental one...
First of all, there is no way that IMF is going to be liable for what this moron does on his personal time. Your viewpoint of rape/sexual assault victims is pretty dismal, but there are criminal repercussions to being "paid off"...obstruction of justice charges and perjury among the most likely.

Yes, there are creeps in the world that would do anything for money. But, would you allow yourself to be paid off if you had been (as examples) violently attacked, sexually assaulted, or a family member had been murdered? I still believe that most victims of crimes really do want justice first and foremost. Civil suits can always follow.

9. Classic example of projection
I never cast aspersions on the victim. However, in our legal system, money damages is the only compensation available.

As unfortunate as the woman's plight may have been, she can only be made whole with money. As simple as that.

Do you think a lawyer took her case so quickly out of the goodness of his/her heart?

Lastly, IMF Is liable if the guy's US trip was paid by IMF in whole or in any part because then it would be construed that he was on official business. Do you think his JFK-CDG first class ticket was paid personally?

10. Uggh....
I can't deal with your cynicism and attitude towards victims. No, I do not believe the only way that a sexual assault victim can be made to feel whole (if that is even possible) is through $$... For many many decades, all these (mainly women) have ever wanted was justice via criminal prosecution. It sickens me to think some feel that all these victims are just gold diggers. Likewise, though I have a less generous viewpoint towards the motivations of attorneys, yes, there are those who will reach out to those who they feel to be deserving of legal representation, especially when it evokes a cause that they themselves believe most strongly in. Arguably, this defines ACLU lawyers, as but one example.

And, no, IMF is unlikely to be liable for criminal behavior.

3. I don't know what to do except say a prayer for this poor woman and her
daughter. They are going to put her through the wringer, I'm sure. She did the right thing though. Even when you get punished for it, you still have to do what you think is right if you want to look at yourself in the mirror.

5. So it also turns out
that the woman he had a "consensual affair" with said years ago that she was bullied into it. Now I'm having a hard time figuring out why a high level employee who could presumably get a job elsewhere didn't just quit and tell him to shove it instead, but this is hardly an "affair."
