Kloppenburg vote edges Prosser in recount, but many ballots yet uncounted
Source: Associated Press

Justice David Prosser held a 7,316-vote lead over challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg before a statewide recount began April 27. The state Government Accountability Board is providing daily updates on the recount's progress by precinct. Here's a look at where the recount stood as of Tuesday afternoon:

_Precincts recounted and given a preliminary review by board staff: 3,502 of 3,602

_Prosser's current total: 714,097

_Kloppenburg's current total: 730,676

_The board reported that counties have recounted 1,446,495 votes, which is approximately 97 percent of the total votes cast. Waukesha County is the last county still counting votes.

1. Is Waukesha County heavily GOP or...
can Kloppenburg retain the lead?

9. Waukesha is GOP
Not the city, but the suburbs, which overwhelm sanity. Brookfield and the wards (particularly MINE) -- the 12th, Aargh) is the one city in question, and is very much on the dark side.

That ward is the one that caused the trouble. Yes, the county clerk is a certified Rethug and using her very own "system" to tabulate results, but I fear for Kloppenberg's tally.

This stinks, but the well oiled machine will sink her.

A friend is a poll worker in that ward and she reports all was done to order, but that they then sent the raw material to the County Clerk, as is the procedure here.

This is a HEAVILY red area and sadly, I report that the lines were long that day, with many smug-looking voters.

2. If those numbers hold, Waukesha County, won't make a difference.
It was something like a 5000 lead, wasn't it?

4. Very little change from the original count
Waukesha will go huge for Prosser and he'll have a similar lead as the original.

5. Wait for it...
Here comes ol' County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus running down the hall yelling "Wait! Waaaaitt!!!! I just found a bag of 20,000 more votes in the trunk of my car!!!".

6. Paper ballots, paper ballots, paper ballots.
With them, we stand a chance against the Rethugligan fraud machine.

Without them, we are well and truly f**ked. (Witness Tennessee.)

7. Most of Wisconsin's ballots are on paper.
Counted on machines, but still there's a paper trail.

Nickolaus just had control of the paper and the bags and can't prove that they were secure.

And that leaves out the issue of whether the machines counted them correctly either time.

8. I know. Though fraud can/does still occur in WI, it leaves a paper trail (literally.)
Here in Tennessee, we vote ENTIRELY on vapor-based DREs (unless you vote provisonal or absentee). As I said, well and truly f**ked.

12. Yes...Paper Ballots!!
With corporate power and control seeping into every core of our democracy, I am quite uneasy about the Presidential election; (actually all elections)!

16. 27 State Governments are Under Compete Teabagger Control
Those 27 states make up 270 electoral votes :(

They will be doing voter list purges in all of those states.
They have been passing new ID legislation that will prevent thousands of Democrats from voting.

Teabaggers will be running the central tabulators in all of those states.

Teabagger governors have been doing state takeovers of Democratic stronghold cities.
Look for very long lines, broken and rigged voting machines, and who knows what else
where they have done this.

10. Whether This Is News Depends On
What the vote totals were for these same counties in the earlier canvas. The "found" ballots came from a single city in Waukesha County and netted Prosser roughly 7,500 votes. Other areas in this county were already tabulated. Anybody know what the margin was for the entire county. If it was around 23,000 then nothing changes. And what ever happened with the discovery that the ballots for this County were not secured. Is that why the vote is so delayed? How do they treat these non-secured ballots?

13. It looks
like she is approx. 14 thousands ahead. The Posser's partner in Wass..county only counted approx. 8,000 for him. Am I wrong in seeing that she may be the winner?

14. Not sure where you are getting 8,000 from.
The original count in Waukesha County was Prosser 92,263 Kloppenburg 32,758.

15. This means that Kloppenburg is on a pace to lose the recount by about 5,000 votes.
Edited on Tue May-17-11 06:51 PM by eomer
The original official count in the precincts that remain uncounted as of this evening (5/17) was:
Prosser: 35,413
Kloppenburg: 13,833

If the recount were to result in no change in those remaining precincts then the recount total would end up like this:
Prosser = 714,097 + 35,413 = 749,510
Kloppenburg = 730,676 + 13,833 = 744,509

So Kloppenburg would need to pick up 749,510 - 744,509 = 5,001 votes in the precincts remaining to be recounted to win the recount.

Since the original total in the precincts remaining to be recounted was 49,246 votes, Kloppenburg is not going to pick up 5,001 votes unless one or more gross errors is discovered in those remaining precincts.

So it looks almost certain at this point that Kloppenburg is not going to come out ahead at the end of the recount and would have to contest the results based on the numerous chain of custody failures in order to be declared the winner.

The above is based on the spreadsheet update released today by the GAB:
