Concord MonitorHouse Speaker William O'Brien backed off his plan to call a vote yesterday on the vetoed right-to-work legislation, saying he would attempt the override when he was sure it would succeed.
Despite a nearly full House yesterday, O'Brien told reporters after the session that Republican leaders needed to work harder to ensure their members show up.
"It just wasn't the appropriate time," he said. "I think we are moving to a point where we do have the numbers."
O'Brien said he delayed the vote to give his caucus a chance to "digest" recent endorsements of the right-to-work bill by the Business and Industry Association and the National Federation of Independent Business. He also pointed to the absence of three longtime state lawmakers - Rep. Norman Major of Plaistow, Rep. David Hess of Hooksett and Rep. Sherman Packard of Londonderry - saying other Republicans look to them for guidance.
