State Rep. Boman switches to Democratic Party

Published: Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 2:51 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 2:51 p.m.
MONTGOMERY | State Rep. Daniel Boman, who represents part of Tuscaloosa County, switched to the Democratic party today.

Boman, a 36-year-old lawyer from Sulligent, said Wednesday’s vote on a bill to change the state’s tenure and fair dismissal laws for educators convinced him he was in the wrong party.

Boman, elected as a Republican last November, voted against the tenure and fair dismissal bill that Democrats said removes much of the due process for teachers facing discipline or firing.

..............

Boman’s switch changes the dynamics of the Tuscaloosa County legislative delegation. The delegation, previously 4-3 Republican, now becomes 4-3 Democrat.

53. Democratic Party includes alot of variables
including what used to be the moderates. All thats left of the Republicans are a few of these but mostly Tea Party Wannabe's who end up losing because a Real Tea Party candidate is in there and strips the vote.

I welcome moderates. Easier to talk to because some of them actually know the facts. Tea Party wannabe's and Tea Party folks are based in lala land. can't have a real debate with them.

"...elected as a Republican last November,..."

....I suppose we should be grateful for the switch, but I'd like to think we're gradually moving the Party to the Left, not Right....

....I hope Boman doesn't turn out to be someone who needs to be primaried....

10. I hope we see more of this.
The Republican party has become radicalized. I've read bits and pieces here and there about moderate Repub officeholders getting more uncomfortable with the takeover by the severe right.

It would be the coolest ting ever if the two ladies from Maine would switch over.

47. Not all Repubs are nut-jobs.
And, generally I don't want neanderthals to enter the Democratic party. However, I think when moderate R's defect all the way up to the Democratic party rather than just cop out and declare themselves "Independent", this is an excellent indicator that Democratic ideas are edging out regressive Republican ideas. The public at large will begin to perceive how radical the conservative movement in this country has become.

Also, the numbers are important. The more Democrats you have in the chamber, the better. I know this one more Dem won't change Alabama much. But any repudiation of Republican ideas is a positive step.

49. How is it a repudiation of Republican ideas?
These people are Republicans, but part of a minority of the party. By having them join the Democratic party, their ideals are not changing, but they are brining in a great many conservative ideals into the party. All this does is hurt Democrats as a whole. Would you have all Republicans join the party, just so we could have the numbers? What are the numbers for if they're made up of Republicans?

14. I think that's excellent news. I hope this starts happening
more. If anyone saw Rachel last night, there was a young Republican State Congressman (I don't know from which state) who was practically crying about a gay marriage issue. He's an Iraq war veteran and he said that one of his fellow soldiers died in the war right by him. He said the soldier was gay and that he (the Congressman) fought in the war so Americans can all be free to do what we want (or something like that). It was very, very touching and sad. When I first read this post, I was thinking it was him but then I read further and it's not....wouldn't surprise me if he switched too.

I remember all too well when our Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell decided, once he got to D.C., that he'd rather be a Republican. Too squicky on both sides - betrayal on one, lack of trust on the other.

Ick.

Even the Republicans are pissed about insisting they'll hold up aid to disaster areas to demand perks for oil companies.

I imagine the amount of pissed is far higher in Tuscaloosa, where that sort of bullshit really hits home right now.
